Edge wasn't even a convincing vampire and you wanted him to do this?

No, Edge is a geek. I love him but he's a geek.

JD served to reboot Rhea and Priest and while it intended to do the same with Edge, it instead failed miserably and a lot of that was creative and himself deciding to try to be a mix of Rated R Superstar but as a cult leader or something.
Watching the segment where Finn joins and they turn on Edge is such a brilliant moment and yet Edge walking down with them felt wrong.
Finn was the better choice and the current version is superior to what was there. The fact they opened Smackdown on Fox shows how big the group grew. Big praise.

For someone who spent the peak years of his career as an amazing heel and usually sucking as a babyface (those 2004 and 2010 face runs were brutal) it completely flipped post-comeback. Grizzled vet face is the spot for him now.
He almost had another failed heel run a year before the JD one too. During the build to Wrestlemania 37 it seemed like he was leaning towards heel, even screwing over Daniel Bryan during a title match with Roman, but it never really stuck.

The nice part about early JD is that it gave Rhea and Priest some needed space, after Priest's ill-fated 'Damien Side' gimmick and Rhea being used as a tag wrestler for a few months. Otherwise, I think getting rid of Edge was the right move, though there are some contingencies there. They get spared a few weeks of 'spooky' booking due to Rhea getting hurt, which in turn meant that her MITB match (where she would have lost to Bianca) never happened, and by the time she was back, Triple H was in charge and the group started changing almost immediately from there, even before Dom joined.
This is from the first Raw after Vince stepped down:
IT'S NOT YOUR ANNIVERSARY, IT'S MY BIRTHDAY!

OK, so I like the idea of a former Ministry member tKing the mantle of vaguely supernatural character on the roster, and Edge was certainly trying his best...
But why the helm did that involve stupid shit like Damien throwing AJ out of the ring, turning the lights purple, and that somehow stopping the match altogether?

I remember saying this at the time, but I thought it was pretty obvious Edge and Vince had different ideas for the group and what we got was them kinda just meeting in the middle in a way that didn't work at all. Judgment Day kicking him out and just becoming goth jocks who skipped school to smoke cigarettes, play football and listen to Bauhaus in the woods was the best thing to happen to them.

No. It just felt weird and boring. Judgement Day is a lot better now as "typical heel faction" than "vampires"

I would’ve liked to have seen how things under the Triple H setup would’ve gone. Like, it was in the space of a month that things went from “Edge is in charge” to “Balor in, Edge out” to “Triple H is writing so the whole act is retooled”.

Rhea got hurt the same night they turned on Edge, which meant they weren't doing much in the few weeks before Triple H took over. Without that, it might have been harder to retool them so successfully.

I was fine with Edge as Judgement Day leader & the Rhea reveal was top level stuff. The turn on Edge was great & now the real Leader of Judgement Day has taken over….Dom. So yes Edge had potential but it’s turned out more fun this way.
