Context for why this was posted tonight if you didn't watch RAW: Carlito made a remark backstage when Damage CTRL was walking out of Pearce's office, talking about how he needs to learn Chinese. It was a very racist "joke", and thankfully WWE is catching hell for it on social media. Whoever wrote that line needs to be fired, tbh. Unless it was an adlib by Carlito, in which case he needs to issue an apology. |

"All Asian people are Chinese" is a really lazy, racist-ass trope. No getting around that. Even if it's meant to show Carlito is a dumbass, there's better ways of doing that.

The whole "Oh they speak Chinese" thing (despite being Japanese) is a thing that is very ingrained into American culture, and it's very offensive. There were other ways to portray Carlito as a dumbass that didn't involve a xenophobic as hell joke. That's ignoring the fact that IYO has made it very clear that those kinds of jokes really piss her off. SRS mentioned she was subjected to this in NXT (referring to the "I'm Japanese, bitch" line). He also alluded to WWE scripting that line intentionally, and that Carlito should have turned it down. And like mentioned above, the sheer amount of casual racism popping up about this "joke" is incredibly high and shows how much of a problem this is with the WWE fanbase in particular. The fact that this line was supposedly edited out of the social media uploads tells you that WWE knows they messed up real bad. |

I don’t think it was that big of a deal. It was a dumbass heel being a dumbass heel imo. You can showcase that in other ways, easily. Not feeding into racist as shit remarks that IYO has gotten before and gone on record as saying how much it bothers her. All it does is normalize racism, something WWE has done dozens of times before. So much so as to desensitize people to an extent where comments like this can be rationalized by people. |
