The one thing that sticks with me is all the people whose line was "Roman isn't bad but this character is dogshit and this push is unwatchable". Vince can delude himself into thinking that he 'won' in the end by getting Roman over as a top star but for how many people knew he had top star potential and was just being booked like garbage with an ill-fitting character, that a heel turn and and his natural swagger were worth more than being Samoan John Cena, this was a big win. Just not one that's ever being to be copped to ever historically over any of this.

I'm sure Roman hated that period too if you were to ask him. He's been so much more confident and comfortable as the Tribal Chief. So absolutely nobody benefitted from it including Roman.

"During the match, Reigns was booked to kick out of four Attitude Adjustments (one of which was off the top rope)" lol I forgot about that stuff. Incredible how Roman reinvented himself as this amazing crime boss heel character. This heel run proves one thing: Roman should never be a face.

Especially in the modern era when half the faces are just heels who people started cheering.

When he does drop the title and comes back a few months later to save Cody, Seth or Jey from a beat down the pop is going to be enormous.
All it took was a heel turn, a global pandemic and a record breaking, sometimes torturous title reign.

Wrestlemania 32 was the worst. HHH/Ambrose had a great mini-feud. HHH/Wyatt teased a match and the crowd erupted. HHH/Ziggler even had a great match on TV. At that point almost anyone other option would have been better than HHH/Reigns for Mania. Even if they did it a year or two earlier it could have been fine. The week after Shield split Reigns and Ambrose cut their promo with Ambrose saying he was going after Rollins and Reigns saying he would target HHH. Sounds like a decent enough plan but then they didn't even do the match at Summerslam like seemed to be the plan and by the time they go back to it 2 years later Roman is dead in the water as a face. WrestleMania 32 was also WWE going “hey you remember what everyone hated about how we booked the Rumble match. Well let’s do that again, because across an entire agonizingly long show.”

Remember when Daniel Bryan returned from injury in 2015, was quickly eliminated from the Rumble, randomly challenged Roman for his Mania main event, lost the match and endorsed Roman afterwards only for Reigns to still get booed? What a fun couple of months that was.

And they left things out too.
Remember how Miz beat Roman for the IC title to a huge pop and was celebrated by both live crowds because they hauled Miz’s ass to the Manhattan Center ASAP to celebrate with them too?
That’s how happy people were Roman lost.

It was insufferable (succotash) and most fans could see a mile off how well a heel turn would work. In my opinion we have only been proved right over the past 2-3 years and I don't think the fact they waited an additional 4 years to pull the trigger effected the success of the turn either.

Soon after The Shield broke up, Roman Reigns was in the ring and "CENA SUCKS!" chants started up. The response by Reigns was perfect "You're damn right Cena sucks when Roman is in the house!". All WWE had to do with Reigns was book him like he was booked as he was in The Shield for the groups all too brief time as a face stable.
Instead, creative decided that the best way for Roman to start his solo run was for him to spike Steph McMahons coffee, causing her to barf all over Vickie Guerrero. Later that night, Trips decided that the best punishment for Roman was to put him in the ladder match for the vacant WWE Title.
That pretty much summed up Romans booking. WWE should have kept him a Silent Badass Killer, instead they made him an ass.

It was pretty much Kevin Nash/Diesel 1995 all over again, turning a badass that will run down whomever gets in his way into a smiley joking overcome the odds babyface.
At least WWE was more financially stable in 2015 compared to 1995 though.

Who was still, somehow, a babyface despite trying to murder Braun with an Ambulance. Braun started it. Let’s not make him out to be Mr. Innocent. Braun did absolutely kill Roman on what seemed like a nightly basis before that Ambulance match and much of the audience absolutely loved it. I remember one poster starting a thread that it was the best Roman had looked since The Shield broke up because as soon as he came to the ring Braun destroyed him. That Ambulance match was hilarious - Roman lost by literally jumping into the back and for some reason Heath Slater and Curt Hawkins had a match while they were trying to get Braun out of wrecked Ambulance.
