Here are my NXT Thoughts, Facts & Stats:
Damn. Right out of the gate, NXT starts hot with Carmelo Hayes getting attacked. There goes his Smackdown debut on Friday. Solid opening segment with Cora Jade, Lyra Valkyria, Blair Davenport, & Nikkita Lyons. I guess we have a Tag Team Match as the NXT Main Event.
Good, we get the crap out of the way with the Mixed Tag, so we can enjoy the rest of NXT tonight.
Yes, I was right. Lyons & Valkyria VS Davenport & Jade will be great.
Very good promo by Dragon Lee. Looking forward to seeing who he will be defending against, but thanks to Fightful Select, I know who it is so I got my Facts & Stats ready.
Josh Briggs, Fallon Henley, & Brooks Jensen VS Meta-Four was awful. I'm sorry there was nothing good about the match & I like Briggs & Jensen & Meta-Four as wrestlers. I guess Briggs will wrestle Dar for the Heritage Cup next. FACTS: This was the 1st time since Johnny Gargano & Candice LeRae defeated Keith Lee & Mia Yim on 6/3 & 6/10/20 that a Mixed Tag Match took place 2 weeks in a row on NXT & 1st time there were 2 6-Person Mixed Tag Team Matches back-to-back on NXT. This was Josh Briggs, Fallon Henley, & Brooks Jensen's 1st 6-Person Mixed Tag in their Career, but Briggs & Henley defeated Jensen & Kiana James on 4/25. This was Meta-Four's 2nd week in a row in a Mixed Tag.
It looks like Carmelo Hayes will be OK. Good segment with him & Trick Williams.
I like them announcing the Men's NXT Breakout Participants from their Colleges. All of them have wrestled on Level Up except for Keanu Carver, who has yet to wrestle. Everyone else are great & have a lot of potential. I like Riley Osbourne being announced from Chase U, though he's English, as he wrestled as Josh Terry in NXT UK. I like Lexis King laying out Trey Bearhill.
Myles Borne VS Oba Femi was pretty good. FACTS: This was Oba Femi's 1st NXT since he defeated Oro Mensah on 4/25. This was Myles Borne's 1st NXT since he, Josh Briggs, & Brooks Jensen lost to Charlie Dempsey, Drew Gulak, & Damon Kemp on 9/12 & 1st 1-on-1 on NXT since he lost to Noam Dar on 4/18.
OK promo by Tiffany Stratton.
Dragon Lee VS Tyler Bate was incredible. Great 1st successful title defense for Lee. This should be a great reign for Lee. FACTS: If Tyler Bate would have won, he would have been the 2nd 1st-time Champion in a row, the 1st to be a former NXT UK Champion, the 1st to be a former NXT UK Tag Team Champion, the 1st to be a former Heritage Cup Champion, & the 5th to be a former NXT Tag Team Champion after Adam Cole, Johnny Gargano, Wes Lee, & Roderick Strong. This was Dragon Lee's 1st North American Championship Defense, so if he would have lost, he would have been the 1st since Trick Williams who lost to Dominik Mysterio on NXT on 10/3/23 to lose in his 1st Defense. As of NXT, Dragon Lee’s North American Championship Reign lasted 3 days, which is tied with Trick Williams (9/30/23-10/3/23) for the Shortest Reign of All-Time.
Wow, such bad acting with Briggs & Jensen & Fallon Henley. I wish Dusty was still alive to give promo lessons. I don't know who they have teaching them now. But Briggs VS Dar in a Heritage Cup Match could be good.
Wow. 2nd Generation Wrestlers in Ava & Lexis King. BTW, how did Ava get her job as Shawn Michael's assistant. Wow, King's now in the NXT Breakout Tournament. Damn, I wanted to see Trey Bearhill. He was very impressive in his few matches on Level Up.
Wow, I was not expecting to see Eddy Thorpe VS Dijak end that way with the turnbuckle coming off. That looked so real & different. They already had a Strap Match. What will be next? FACTS: This was the 1st time in his Career that Eddy Thorpe wrestled 3 weeks in a row on NXT. This was Dijak's 1st NXT since he defeated Tyler Bate on 11/7. This was the 4th 1-on-1 Match between them after 8/1 & 8/29 (won by Dijak), & 9/26 (won by Thorpe), with Thorpe winning 2 & Dijak winning 2, making it the most re-matched in NXT in 2023.
OK segment with Blair Davenport & Cora Jade.
A fun Chase U Segment.
Riley Osbourne VS Keanu Carver was excellent. I know how great Osbourne is as he's been having great matches on Level Up including one of my favorite matches of the year against
Axiom. Carver was impressive in his debut. FACTS: This was the 1st time since Karmen Petrovic VS Jaida Parker on 10/17 that both wrestlers made their NXT debut in the same match & 1st men's match since Odyssey Jones VS Andre Chase on 7/20/21.
Good interaction with Lyra Valkyria & Nikkita Lyons.
Wow, Dragon Lee VS a member of Drew Gulak's group will be awesome, no matter who it is.
OK segment with Riley Osbourne & Thea Hail & Jacy Jayne & then Kiana James & Izzi Dame.
What happened Hank & Tank VS Gallus that was supposed to take place tonight?
What the hell happened to the NXT Women's Division? Nikkita Lyons & Lyra Valkyria VS Blair Davenport & Cora Jade was bad. The stuff with Tatum Paxley was brutal. FACTS: This was Nikkita Lyons' 1st match overall since she defeated Jakara Jackson on Level Up on 1/20, her 1st NXT match since a Battle Royal on 1/10, & 1st 2-on-2 Tag Match since she & Zoey Stark lost to Kayden Carter & Katana Chance on 11/8/22. This was Lyra Valkyria's 1st 2-on-2 Tag Team Match since she & Becky Lynch defeated Kiana James & Tiffany Stratton on 9/19. This was Blair Davenport's 1st ever Tag Team Match in NXT. This was Cora Jade's 1st match overall since she lost to Dana Brooke on 7/25 & her 1st 2-on-2 Tag Team Match since she & Roxanne Perez defeated Gigi Dolin & Jacy Jayne on 7/5/22.
So, they're going to do Hank & Tank VS Gallus next week, but now will it be a 6-Man Tag with Joe Gacy & Joe Coffey. What the hell is wrong with NXT tonight?
At least, I can see if NXT will be good next week as they're taping the show tomorrow, so I can get everything organized. I love that Drew Gulak's crew has a name now, The No Quarter Catch Crew.
Excellent closing segment with Trick Williams, Ilja Dragunov, & Carmelo Hayes. I agree with Williams. The Men's Iron Survivor Challenge Match is my NXT Match of 2023. I love all of the back-and-forth & we still don't know what happened?
