You still think the original is better. And while I don't count them myself, but if you want to include samples for Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby" with Queen / David Bowie "Under Pressure."
Well for me I like to start with Cherrelle's "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On", I am sorry it is just better than the Robert Palmer version. The beats, the synts I just like better, not to mention I think she is a better singer than Palmer, and lastly it makes more sense coming from a women. The song is about friend zoning someone. Unless Palmer is about a gay relationship, just doesn't make much sense.
And if you want to talk about samples, I am sorry while I love Marrah Carey's "Fantasy", I think I still like Tom Tom Club's "Genius Of Love" better.

I know I'm in the minority but as great as Johnny Cash's cover is, it'll never match the heartbreaking, bleak nature of the original "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails. Tone is just completely different. Credit where it's due, the change he made to the lyrics really is better, though.

Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” is an impressive display of singing but Dolly’s original version is just heartbreaking.

I get the feeling that this might be a US/UK divide in terms of which is the bigger hit, but my American self considers Busted's version of "Year 3000" the superior guilty pleasure pop rock song to the Jonas Brothers' take.
I like Thin Lizzy's original version of "Whiskey In the Jar" better than Metallica's, although they are both really good.
I think that the cover(s) of "Mad World" have become more well-known than the original over time, but Tears for Fears' version is still the best.

Man Who Sold The World. The Nirvana version is probably better known at this point, but Bowies is better, you could say the same about Where Did You Sleep Last Night with Lead Belly too.

The Offspring's "Totalimmortal" is a lot more well-known because it was on the Me, Myself & Irene soundtrack. But I much prefer the AFI original.

Pretty much any of Metallica's covers. And I say that as a HUGE Metallica fan. They just cover songs I really, really like, so it's kinda hard to top the originals imo. Especially their covers of Breadfan by Budgie, Am I Evil by Diamond Head and their Misfits covers.

I prefer Dolly's version of I Will Always Love You, especially when the story behind the song is considered.

You probably haven't heard the Keith Urban song, but you especially haven't heard the way better original.

I still like Seether doing Careless Whisper but love the original more. On the opposite end I love Conquer Divides Bad Guy more than the original

Joe Cocker’s version of With a Little Help from my Friends might be better known thanks to being the theme from The Wonder Years, but I still prefer the Beatles’ version.

I’m not going to claim that Otis Redding’s original version of “Respect” is better than Aretha Franklin’s iconic version but it is a very good version as well. Pretty sure most people don’t even know Aretha’s version is a cover, which is a big disservice to Otis.

The Zutons version of Valerie straight up got erased out of relevance by the Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse version, which is a shame because that one was mid.

And if you want to talk about samples, I am sorry while I love Marrah Carey's "Fantasy", I think I still like Tom Tom Club's "Genius Of Love" better. Great example to start with (though, Fast Car being the first reply felt obligatory). I get how Palmer was trying to interpret it, and honestly, I think that makes it a bit worse than if I didn't; his comparatively passionless, "too cool for this hot and bothered hanger-on" interpretation just has none of the weight of Cherelle's original. And in the age of incels, friendzones, and men being very honest in what they feel entitled to when they take a woman out on a date, her version feels as relevant as ever. Using the sample example, while "I Wonder" by Kanye West is significantly more popular, and gaining new resurgence still via Instagram and TikTok, I've fallen in love with Labi Siffre's "My Song" in a way I never did Kanye's version. I've found myself listening to that song for hours, and the song is only four and a half minutes long.

Not to mention which I forgot to mention, production by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, in the mid 80's there were few better in the R&B world.

The Crash Test Dummies version of "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead" reached a wider audience than the XTC original, mainly due to being used in "Dumb & Dumber".
Metalica's "Am I Evil" definitely hit a wider audience.
