Just learned of this and figured hey, bares making a thread about.
It's kind of crazy to think about how old a lot of the classic horror movies are really, sort of puts it into perspective that we're only a few years off from Halloween having its own 50th anniversary. Though of course before that we've got the way more important anniversary of Exorcist II: The Heretic, which is what I'm sure everyone is actually looking forward to.

Know why this specifically makes me feel old? Because I saw it in theaters for its 25th anniversary back when I was in high school and remember feeling like I was watching something *ancient*.
Also of note, people in the audience brought actual children to that screening and I still think that should’ve been considered child abuse.

It really is an all timer. Friedkin is just such a brilliant director and smartly plays everything as so real it gets your nerves unsettled. I personally have TCM as the goat but there’s something about how The Exorcist works that is top tier. Incredible crisis of faith movie too btw.

Now that I think about it, I've never seen the first Exorcist. I read the book, and have watched and love Exorcist III, but for some reason I've never watched the original movie.

We recorded a watch-along podcast episode in celebration of its 50th anniversary Here’s the link on Spotify but you can find it wherever you listen to podcasts. The passage and changes of time is a big part of the discussion. Just search Scare Value Podcast wherever you listen to stuff and it’s the latest episode. Unless you’re reading this tomorrow. Then our top 10 horror movies of 2023 episode will be out. - open.spotify.com/episode/4hNsraBbqEfxNLumSXRGQB?si=af4ba534f62b4fa

I have so much more of an appreciation for it now than when I first watched it as a teenager and got impatient waiting for the little girl to turn green.
Ellen Burstyn is actually the standout for me. The first half of the movie is almost like a medical mystery tale and Chris MacNeil's increasing fear and desperation is so palpable.

I was actually underwhelmed when I saw it. Because I’d read the book first, there was no way to match the imagery that conjured.

It's still the only horror movie that actually scares me. Well that and the ending to Sleepaway Camp.

Saw it as a kid and was bored. Rented it when I was 12 and was bored again. When the DVD hit with THE VERSION YOU NEVER SAW bought that watched and bored again.
Love the novel. Find it scary and amazing. But the film looks great but nothing about it keeps my attention.
Pretty sure TCM hits 50 next year and that is a true scary classic.

And I will go to my grave saying that Exorcist 3 has one of the greatest jump scares of all time.

I was so, so, so scared to watch this as a kid. I rented it and it took me forever to put the vhs in (I was raised catholic).
I love it. I get people’s qualms but I love it. It’s incredible as a film in itself, but the perfect kind of horror for my money. No jump scare bullshit. The kind of horror that seeps into you. Feeling real at times.
..which is probably credit to the director though one can absolutely rule that as abusive, terroristic and not okay.
But yah. I still love this film.
