#115 - The Royal Hotel (Hulu)

Doesn't utilize tension as well as Green's previous and better film, The Assistant, but it still does it better than most movies. I just wasn't as gripped by the journey to get to the payoff or the payoff itself. Garner and Henwick were good though. [**½]
#116 - Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Disney+)

I am admittedly not a big Taylor Swift fan but gave this a watch with my wife. And even when it wasn't songs I liked, I have to admit the spectacle and production of this all was pretty fantastic. [****]

117. The Vanishing (1993) - on it's own a decent enough thriller, as a remake you can't help but get stuck on the ending change. 118. The Match (1999) - decent footie comedy/drama with a decent cast. Alan Shearer cameos and can't act.

Been on a women's basketball kick lately and I went into this documentary thinking it would just be about the WNBA in the COVID Bubble but I got so much more in regard to the social and political climate of the time. [****]

21. Pretty Woman
Well, put this off a while. I feel weird about the film. The writing, chemistry, everything is fantastic, but there's a bit of an unsettling undercurrent to the story a lot. Reading about what it could have been, I don't know if its elements of that trying to still creep in.

119. The Day After (1983) - still powerful more then 40 years later. 120. Skeleton Coast (1988) - b-movie with a cast that includes Ernest Borgnine, Robert Vaughn, Oliver Reed and Herbert Lom. Enjoyable in the not great way.

43. The Purge (2013) - Watched this on Blu-ray. I have made it a point to watch the "Purge" films. I hear a lot of mixed opinions on them, but I am going to see for myself. I had heard about these films about how they are about one night a year where all crime is legalized, even though it's mostly focused on violence. I am also aware that there is a TV series, but I will go through it after I watch the films.
I have often heard that the main complaint for this film is that it's primarily focused on a home invasion, whereas the sequels have all of the violence occur in the city. I could see it's not like other home invasion films that I've seen like "Panic Room," "Breaking In," and "Hostage," and it has more of a slasher feel in some areas. I will admit that I was surprised at some aspects of the plot, but at the same time, given the premise of the film, I wasn't completely surprised at what was going to happen. Early in the film, the daughter's boyfriend seizes an opportunity to kill the girl's father. I mean it does go with the theme, right? But then you have a revelation at the end, which while I called it to a point, some of the aspects about it didn't make a lot of sense. I did like the outcome of it as it made for an interesting twist.
However, with this being the first film of the series, I think it was odd that it focused on a home invasion of all things. I heard that "The Purge: Anarchy" improved on the concept a bit. I shall check that one out soon.

45. Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night (1987) 46. Tremors (1990) 47. Tremors 2: Aftershocks (1996)Like I said, almost all the Tremors movies are on YouTube. Wikipedia says this was Direct-to-Video, but I could swear I remember it getting a theatrical release. For those not familiar, Kevin Bacon's Val has moved on after the last movie and it's up to Earl and Burt to helm this one. They're in Mexico battling Graboids that are threatening an oil refinery when they encounter the next phase of the Graboids life cycle, Shriekers. You could definitely tell the budget took a hit with this one compared to the first. We barely see any Graboids in this, and while what we do see looks decent, the special effects surrounding them (like the dirt rising and falling as they dig through) are all gone. The Shriekers are the main threat of the movie. They look good in some scenes, but in others the movie just does a horrible job hiding the fact that they're puppets or were either green screened or CGI'd in. That said, there was some good character interaction (Burt was amazing as always) and, over-all, it was a fun B-movie story.

22. Alien
Wow this is a masterpiece, so much suspense it was hard to look at even now.
Every scene, set are so rich with texture. A couple of models looked a little plastic but that's the worst I could say.
Absolutely see why this became a franchise, need to see the rest now.

44. The Purge: Anarchy - Watched this on Blu-ray. Now this is more like it. I had heard that this film improved on its predecessor and I can't argue on that front. I remember when I first watched the trailer for this a long time ago that it gave me vibes of "Judgment Night," "The Warriors," "Escape from New York," and many other films about surviving a night with bad people coming after you. I was on a kick with those films recently, so I also felt like fulfilling that a bit.
When I mentioned "The Warriors," I really feel like several scenes paid homage to some scenes and elements from that film. Hell, I had some vibes from the game "Manhunt" with how the purgers looked. Then again, "Manhunt" was inspired by "The Warriors" before Rockstar Games made a game based on the latter, but I digress. I also saw that this was more of an action film this time around.
I also thought that this film brought to light how the events of "The Purge" would go down. I didn't have a problem with the home invasion theme of the first film, but that could have been saved for a sequel or spin-off. Either way, I thought this film was an improvement.
Now to do "The Purge: Election Year."

45. The Purge: Election Year - Watched this on Blu-ray. I felt it was a good time to finish the triple-pack that I had gotten from the library. Plus, after watching "The Purge: Anarchy," I thought why not.
I actually had a lot of fun with this one. I couldn't complain about it following the "surviving the night" plot like the previous film had. It was also a lot more over-the-top this time around, and I don't just mean the whole concept of the Purge itself. Some of the acting was rather hammy, whether it was from the minister or from that detestable teenage girl who swore revenge after being caught almost stealing a candy bar. That girl was clearly having a blast in that role. I also should have expected a lot of shootouts and stuff. It was an action movie, after all, and as a sucker for action movies in general, I couldn't complain about those scenes.
Yes, it was a stupid action flick, but "stupid" doesn't always mean "bad," nor does it mean it can't be enjoyable.
I'll get to "The First Purge" and "The Forever Purge" soon.

I love how varied these Mortal Kombat animated movies are. A goofy yet violent Johnny Cage story with a Vice City 80s vibe? Sign me up. [***½]

122. The Arsenal Stadium Mystery (1939) - some dynamic football (of the soccer kind) action surronded by a mystery and a lead detective who wears a lot of (literal) hats. Enjoyable.

46. Love Lies Bleeding (2024) - Saw this in theaters. I was enticed to see this after seeing trailers for it on YouTube. I am also a sucker for A24 films, so I couldn't pass this up. I thought about going after today, but I did not want to go to evening showings just to see this.
I figured when I saw the trailers that it would be a lesbian love story and a crime film, but I did not expect certain aspects. While I saw that one of the lead characters, played by Katy O'Brian, is a bodybuilder (and the actress is one herself, but she doesn't compete anymore), one thing that I noticed in the trailer were some effects involving her body expanding. I was not sure what to make of it. However, I did think she and Kristen Stewart had good chemistry. Kristen Stewart also did fine in her role and she was a bit funny in some scenes. Ed Harris, I could never complain about him. I also have to give Dave Franco credit as he played a rather despicable character well.
Performances aside, the one thing that I liked about this film was the noir angle and also had somewhat fantasy elements. For the latter, I interpreted them as visions from the characters and not actually happening. In a lot of ways, those elements worked. The soundtrack was also good, and that also includes the score.

47. The First Purge - Watched this on Blu-ray. I took a bit of a break from my "Purge" movie marathon, but here I am.
The first thing I will say is that I had more fun with "Anarchy" and "Election Year," but that is not to say that I didn't find this one interesting. I understand it's the prequel to the first film (which has been my least favorite so far) as it tells how The Purge was started. I noticed how this had quite a political theme with some of the racial themes and classist themes, but then again, the other Purge films had a lot of political themes and they weren't subtle about it.
I could see that there was a mash-up of subgenres in this. Because this is an action-horror franchise, with the last few films having more emphasis on action, I could see that there were elements of a slasher film, a survival film, and also any other action movie that includes shootouts and martial arts fight scenes. Oh, and of course some explosions. I know Michael Bay was one of the producers for these films. Could he have had some influence on some scenes? It's possible.
It did its job for me. I liked the second and third films better, but I would say this comes a little close.
I will watch "The Forever Purge" soon.

23. Ghost in the Shell (1995)
It's gorgeous, but for me, it took too long for the big ideas to really get going, I can appreciate it but not a huge fan.
24. Shaolin Soccer
Now this was ridiculous in the best possible way, so SO OTT and loving every second of it.
