216. VINDICTA (2023) A nervous, rookie paramedic (who can translate Latin, don't worry about it) is sent out into the middle of a riot while a serial killer in a mask made to look like the face of David's Michelangelo statue is murdering people connected to a fire from five years ago.
The reveal of why the killer is in the mask is absolutely nutso. This brought me a "I think they're trying?" joy. Sean Astin is so subdued and check-cashy though.
217. DAMAGED (2024) A serial killer with a "Whoa, dude. EXTREME!" calling card reappears in a new country drawing the American detective that failed to stop him 6 years ago (Samuel L Jackson) to take a long plane ride to help with the new investigation.
The movie is a slow burn of police procedural and character discussions until someone hits the big red button that makes the third act go nutso with the serial killer reveal.
218. SLEEPING DOGS (2024) An ex-police detective with Alzheimer's (Russell Crowe) talks with a prisoner on death row who claims the detective forced a confession out of him and since the detective literally can't remember...he starts to re-investigate after an experimental procedure to help his focus.
The reveal is kind of obvious at a certain point, but it kept me guessing long enough for it to be a decent watch. 219. TRAP (2O24) Yeah, man. You trap that serial killer at this big music concert...if you can!
I sincerely hope that this act of M Night Shyamalan's career keeps going and going. This movie has so many moments of Josh Hartnett making faces and they're all great.
Maybe my favorite movie of the year.
220. SATURDAY THE 14TH (1981) A horror comedy about a family inheriting a house with an evil book in it that a vampire wants. It's a low budget affair that has a couple good moments and a surprisingly horrifying moment when the mother of the family goes into the attic and straight up gets swarmed by bats.
It was a curiosity of mine that I finally scratched.
221. SATURDAY THE 14TH STRIKES BACK (1988) Sequel in name only provides comedy in theory.
Yikes, man. A family is living in a house that has a crack in the basement that is the crossing point for evil. I laughed at one joke, when the main character confronts a bad guy, explains he took all the money he had saved up, and bought a super tough epoxy that will fill any crack and harden in minutes...and then pours a block on the ground because it had already hardened in the bucket he mixed it in.
Not recommended in any way.
222. CRACKCOON (2023) The titular animal of this film is indeed the reason to watch it. You'll have to deal with 20 minutes of "plot building" before the little fella shows up, but he's adorable on sight. Also, his arrival signals the start of the greatest of all acting challenges: "Trying to make it look like you're not just holding a puppet to your face and shaking."
The rest of the movie's humor is very miss and miss with an occasional hit. The sex scene in this movie acts almost like a jumpscare the way it just appears.

120. Gremlins (1984)121. Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) 122. Kindergarten Cop (1990) 123. Big Trouble in Little China (1986)Latest YouTube movie. Again, another all time classic. 124. InHumanoids: The Movie (1986)For those not familiar, based on the short-lived Hasbro toyline, and turning into an equally short-lived animated series, this originally aired on the Super Sunday anthology show as a series of fifteen seven minute shorts. Those shorts were eventually edited together into this under-90 minute "movie" that was released direct-to-video. It was re-edited again into five 30 minute episodes to serve as the multi-part pilot to the series proper, "The Evil That Lies Within". A group of action scientists in power suits called Earth Corps travel below the surface of the Earth to battle a group of monsters living there. Despite the heavy action, macabre tones and surprisingly anime influenced animation, this was pretty unimpressive. The characters were just uninteresting and the story boring.

Heard good things about this and it delivered. An enjoyable low-budget slasher with some cool twists and turns that kept me engaged. [***½]

#42 The Substance
An aging movie star is fired for being too old and takes a mysterious Substance that promises to create a younger 'better' version of herself. I won't say much else about what happens after that except to say it's like Jekyll & Hyde if it was made by David Cronenberg and Baz Luhrmann.
Between the extreme closeups, squelching noises and blinding costume and set colours, it creates a feeling of hyper-reality that helps keep you off-balance which only intensifies as the story spirals out of control. The final 15 minutes of this movie is one of the most insane final sequences in a film that I’ve seen in years. It’s absolute madness!
As I was leaving the cinema, there were people all looking at each other, smiling and laughing bemusedly. Strangers chatting as if as if to confirm with each other “We all saw that right!?”. That’s a very special reaction for a film to create.
VERDICT: Wow! This might be my movie of the year so far.

#43 Starve Acre
Based on the 2019 novel of the same name and set in the 1970s, Starve Acre tells the story of archaelogist Richard and housewife Juliette who have moved to Richard’s childhood farm home in rural Yorkshire along with their young son Owen who isolates himself from the other children and claims to hear strange, phantom whistling.
Going into Starve Acre, on paper, I found there was a lot that would predispose me to liking it. Matt Smith is an actor I’ve always enjoyed and always delivers even when not given the best material to work with, I loved the director's last movie 'Apostasy',and the ‘earthy’ premise of the film gave off quite strong Wicker Man and Pet Sematary vibes. A folk horror with an actor I like and a director I like?
The performances are great, you really feel the two main characters turmoil, and I love the grim bleak atmosphere created. But this is a slow burner but I’m afraid that the burn is far far too slow. There are certain set pieces that will grab your attention but little occurs between these. Events pick up towards the end, and I do mean The End. The final 5-10 minutes feel as if the film is on fast-forward when we all of a sudden jolt towards the conclusion. I was less shocked at the ending and more shocked that the movie was over when it felt like things were only then beginning to escalate.
VERDICT: With wonderful central performances and heavily laden with a grim, gray atmosphere, the movie's hampered by a glacial pace that leaves you frustrated by the time you reach the rushed ending.

#402 - The Invitation (2022; Hulu)
*1st Viewing
There were some really good ideas in here but they spent too much time in the buildup, meaning the payoff didn't really land. [**½]
#403 - The Rundown (2003; Netflix)

A fun little action comedy boosted by Johnson and William Scott. [***]
