44. The Fall Guy
Ryan Gosling was really good but had zero chemistry with Emily Blunt. The stunt sequences were great. The story was slow paced and kind of stupid. The villains were cartoonishly stupid.

Man, these teen dystopian movies are all copy and paste aren't they? Only like two are good and this certainly isn't one of them. [*½]

45. The Whale
A morbidly obese English teacher hangs out with his daughter for a week. Brendon Frasier definitely deserved the Best Actor Oscar he won for this.

[*½] I remember speaking with someone who had written a trilogy of young adult novels and she spoke about how much the publisher forced her to alter stuff to suit their formula. It doesn't surprise me that the formula extends to movies as well.

210. LURKING FEAR (1994) An HP Lovecraft adaption from Full Moon Entertainment decides to throw in a random mob-related plotline to pad out the runtime. The editing is a pretty rough in this one, or they just didn't get the shots they needed and did the absolute best they could to try and show a full story. Jeffrey Combs in a non-Stuart Gordon related HP Lovecraft related film is still the MVP of the thing as the alcoholic, chain-smoking doctor.
211. SHERLOCK HOLMES (2010) The Asylum's Sherlock Holmes adaptation seems to be playing on the idea that a near-death Watson is spinning a completely nonsensical story for his hospice nurse while she politely listens, so we get things like sea creatures and robots.
It's kind of a rough watch.
212. SHOCKER (1989) Wes Craven's big attempt to make his new Freddy Krueger (since he sold off the rights to the actual Freddy Krueger and was frustrated by New Line's use of the character) really does play off a lot of the same beats until the third act when he's just throwing any and everything at the daggone screen. Horace Pinker has a whole lot of undefined powers in this thing...also a football player gets a concussion and starts getting dream powers?
An interesting watch.
213. DANGEROUS GAME: THE LEGACY MURDERS Holy moly. Somehow attempting to combine Jumanji with Saw/Escape Room and a dash of Knives Out, this film follows a rich family trapped in their patriarch's mansion and told by a foreboding voice to play a board game or else. A lot of dumb in this one.
You get Will Sasso in a regular acting role in this one.
214. IN A VIOLENT NATURE (2024) Walking simulator Friday the 13th. There were plenty of people who mentioned the gory kills in this film, but I feel like no one prepared me for the surprising dark comedy moments that pop up within the runtime.
It's a quiet and deliberate film, but I enjoyed it for what it brought to the "artsy horror" world.
215. BOY KILLS WORLD (2023) Wants to be crazy, absurd, fun and it nails two of those well enough. Has a few funny moments throughout the chaos but the fights lost my attention sometimes.
Perhaps the SHOOT EM UP of the next generation.

Trap (2024) The first bit at the concert and part 2 at the killer's house were good but stupid. Then the final third it felt apart. {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{SPOILER: CLICK TO SHOW}Should have ended either when Lady Raven escaped the killer's house OR after she escaped the limo with the final shot the killer walking off after leaving too.
The final 15 minutes were boring.
Fun film, but it relyed less on the killer being smart and more on everybody else being f***ing idiots. I enjoyed it overall though.

I appreciate what this movie tried to do. The voiceover stuff is a bit overdone at times and there are moments where this seems unsure of what it wants to be. That said, it's a pretty fun over the top action flick that I enjoyed. [***]

Like the original, this is super fun and features a likable cast. Give me Ortega and Dafoe in almost anything and I'm in, plus Ryder, O'Hara, and Keaton? I do think some of the actual plot points were wrapped up way too easily though. [***½]

Finally finished all the Star Trek films, might do Star Wars next.
241 - Star Trek: Insurrection 242 - Star Trek: Nemesis 243 - Raya and the Last Dragon 244 - Another 48 Hrs. 245 - John Wick: Chapter 2
Raya is always fun and Another 48 Hrs was surprisingly enjoyable. The first never really clicked with me and John Wick in 4K is always a pleasure.

112. Life, Liberty and Pursuit on the Planet of the Apes (1980) 113. The Garbage Picking Field Goal Kicking Philadelphia Phenomenon (1998) 114. The Man Called Flintstone (1966)I DVR'd this, along with The Jetsons Meet the Flintstones, over the summer, but I'm only now getting around to watching them. I always thought this was some kind of 80's TV movie, but just discovered that, no, this is a 60's theatrical release that basically served as a finale for the original TV series. The hint should've been Hoppy's presence. I can't think of any other Flintstones project past the original series that used him. Anyways, for those not familiar, Fred gets mistaken for a spy named Rock Slag and he and his family and the Rubbles get caught up in a globe-trotting adventure. It's a charming if unspectacular movie that has a decent animation upgrade from the series. It's nothing I'd go out of my way for, but if you have any nostalgia for The Flintstones at all I'd recommend giving it a watch at least once.

2024 New Releases
#40 Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice
I really enjoyed the visuals and the practical effects used, I got a strong hammer blow of nostalgia in the opening as Danny Elfman’s iconic score played while the camera swooped over what is clearly a model of a town! Michael Keaton is clearly having a ball being back in the black-and-white suit, and Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara are a lot of fun. That said Jenna Ortega is surprisingly under-utilised. Same with Monica Belluci who is presented as the main antagonist in the movie but shows up so infrequently you sort of forget she's in it until she shows up again.
Unfortunately, the film falls down with the story. It's hard to sum up the plot, not because it's complex but because there are so many plot strands that are so underdeveloped it’s hard to argue any of them as the main one. The best I can manage is to say the plot of the film is, “It’s nearly 40 years later and Beetlejuice is back”. Which sort of feels like how the pitch for this movie went.
It’s frustrating because there’s a lot to like in Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice and the components of a good story are in place, but they’re not arranged in the right way at all. Another pass at the script to trim and tighten things up would’ve gone a long way here.
VERDICT: A threadbare, scattershot plot unfortunately hinders a movie full of great visuals and fun performances.

2024 New Releases
#41 Speak No Evil
I loved the original Danish Speak No Evil and it was one of my favourite movies in 2022. Then when I heard they were doing an English remake, I didn't care for the idea.
I’ve never understood or appreciated remakes of movies where it’s a straight copy. And this is thankfully not applicable for Speak No Evil. For the first two-thirds, bar some minor changes, the story is essentially the same, however the final act is a totally different film. The director very much puts his own stamp down, changing things up to the point that the original and the remake feels like alternate endings in a Choose Your Own Adventure book. I am always happy to be proven wrong and I can very much state that to be the case here as I actually ended up really enjoying this new iteration of Speak No Evil. The same creeping tension from the original is still there and James McAvoy is amazing in his role, veering from incredibly charming to chillingly terrifying.
As much as I loved the original, if I had to recommend one over the other to someone that’s seen neither, I’d be more inclined to recommend this one. The original Danish movie has one of the grimmest endings of a movie I’ve seen for quite some time and (while I absolutely loved the ballsiness!) I can see it not being for everyone. While the ending of the remake is by no means a walk in the bark, it is decidedly less bleak!
VERDICT: With a tough act to follow, Speak No Evil is able to step out of the shadow of the original by keeping the same strong concept and crawling tension at its core but taking the story in a completely different, yet still satisfying, direction.
