#173 - Shame (Vudu)

This is one of those movies that I know is really good but I just didn't like it all that much. If that makes sense. [***]

This could've been a really cute movie if the protagonist wasn't an awful person who didn't respect boundaries. [**]

28. On the Waterfront
Hell of a month so my first watch all April.
Stunning performances, first time I've seen young Brando and damn, I get it now. Bit of a morality play in some ways, you can tell the ending was an addition but it all works and is just beautiful.

63. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) - Watched this on DVD. For some reason, I made a point to watch all of the Freddy Krueger films. I wonder if it was watching the "Hack the Movies" episode on the 2010 remake. I will note that I have mainly watched the first four films in 2020 (during lockdown, too), and I recall seeing parts of "New Nightmare" and I think I watched "Freddy vs. Jason" but it's been a really long time for both of those. I will watch the entire series, and maybe the 2010 remake.
Now that I've revisited this movie, I will say that all of the practical effects still hold up, but there were some effects that don't hold up like the use of the mannequin at the very end of the film. I could see how this film likely scared a lot of people back in 1984. It was the start of a franchise, even though I had read that Wes Craven (RIP) didn't intend to make this a franchise. Hence why it ended that way. I could see why it's considered a horror classic.

I was hoping for a cute lesbian rom-com and instead I got something that was kinda problematic. But I do like Dylana Gelula in basically everything. [**½]

64. A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge - Watched this on DVD. Round 2 of my Freddy marathon. I remember watching this a while back, and despite being the second film, it didn't really have the whole "dream killer" plot but rather some possession storyline. It probably would have worked better if it was done in another sequel, but hey, I am still going to give my take.
It is definitely one of the oddballs of the franchise. It has a lot of homoerotic undertones, which is weird thinking about this because Mark Patton (the lead actor) is gay but came out sometime after this movie was released. Plus, his character had a lot of chemistry with the character Ron Grady.
Personally, while I would have preferred it to have been like the other films. I know this had become a cult classic over time. I personally feel like this could have been better. I didn't hate it. I will say that the scene when Freddy breaks out of Jessie's body is creepy. I even felt the same fear that Ron felt in that scene. So there are some things to enjoy about this film.

158. Scooby Doo Wrestlemania Mystery (2016) - I had no idea WWE and Scooby Doo had two crossovers, of maybe I did and just merged them together in my mind somewhere down the line, what you expect from a Scooby cartoon, Brodus Clay as a character though WTF.
159. The LEGO Movie (2014) - a lot of fun with a great voice cast.

"Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." The film was complete and utter batshit in its insanity and I f***ing loved it. "Natural Born Killers." Extremely entertaining and a nice look at a different side of Woody Harrelson after his role on Cheers.

Saw The Fall Guy yesterday. Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt were as charming as ever and i enjoyed the action. Had some really funny moments in it too. Really enjoyed it.

19. Roadhouse
An entirely pointless remake of the Patrick Swayze classic. A hero who is damaged enough to be barely likable. A villain who is less evil and more spoiled child. Conor McGregor as a bad guy with an accent so heavy you can’t understand a word he says. Plot hole after plot hole after plot hole. And I can already see where they could build a sequel from if they are dumb enough to make one.

65. Alien (1979) - Saw this in theaters. I saw that this was brought back to the theaters in honor of its 45th anniversary. I thought "why not?" It's definitely a classic. Ridley Scott had the right vision for this film with his direction. Many of the practical effects still hold up. Some bits freaked me out even from the first time I watched it and still kind of freaked me out. Not so much scared me, but I found some parts a little disturbing. Of course, this started a franchise that has a classic sequel and other hit-and-miss sequels.
Now I just hope for when "Aliens" gets brought back to theaters. I know a local theater did a screening of it two years ago, but maybe in two years, other theaters will bring it back for its 40th anniversary.

109. POSTMORTEM (1998) Charlie Sheen is a drunken former San Francisco Detective who has moved to Scotland after writing his book about tracking an infamous child murderer (Not Krueger), who soon finds himself the target of a serial killer who faxes him the obituaries of their victims before murdering them. Before long, the local police come to him for help in cracking the mystery and stopping the killer.
Decent little straightforward SEVEN influenced movie directed by Albert Pyun.
110. TERROR AT LONDON BRIDGE (1985) After London Bridge was purchased by a rich man and moved to Lake Havasu, Arizona in 1971, it is discovered 14 years later that a piece fell off and was in the bottom of the river. With it finally placed, making the bridge whole...IT ALLOWS THE SPIRIT OF JACK THE RIPPER TO EMERGE AND START MURDERING IN MODERN DAY...and the only man who can stop him? Deputy DAVID HASSLEHOFF.
It's like the weird Baywatch Nights episode you've ever seen. Also, it plays off like a JAWS ripoff as the town's government want the killings kept on the down-low, lest tourism be impacted.
What a wonderful concept for a flick.
111. CREATURE (1985) AKA THE TITAN FIND (1985) Re-watched with commentary from Director William Malone. A decent low budget sci-fi horror film that he joking informs was renamed to Creature to take advantage of ALIEN to the shock of absolutely no one.
It's amusing how many directors just mirthfully chuckle to themselves when Klaus Kinski appears on screen and say something along the lines of, "It was...difficult to work with Klaus."
112. THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DONE (2016) Creepy little film about a father/son duo doing an autopsy on a strange corpse that offers more questions than answers until things decide to escalate. I've seen it before, but liked it better this time around. Watched as part of Joe Bob's Last Drive-In Show.
113. HIDEAWAY (1995) Based on the DEAN KOONTZ novel comes a weird plot where Jeff Goldblum dies in a car accident, but a doctor with experimental efforts manages to bring him back to life two hours after death. The only problem is that Goldblum is now visually connected with a serial killer and the answer as to why won't really surprise you, but the CGI graphics that bookend this daggone thing will.
Holy moly, the first five minutes of this movie are pure grade nonsense and I've never been less surprised to find out a film was made by the same guy who did LAWNMOWER MAN and VIRTUOSITY.
114. FEAST II: THE SLOPPY SECONDS (2008) Bad sequel.
115. FEAST III: THE HAPPY ENDING (2009) Worse sequel.

Late Night with the Devil (2024)
Just got back from seeing it at local AMC. Decent movie. Felt more like a made for tv movie type flick, but that's what they were aiming for so not a problem. Some points I guessed where I thought it was going but movie didn't go there. Everyone acted well and whatnot. Kinda let down by the end. But overall a good flick. Did feel like I should have just waited for it on a streaming service and probably wouldn't pay to see it again. But if it popped up on a movie channel or cable I would definitely watch again.

29. Scoop
When it gets to the Prince Andrew interview, it's great. But the stuff before, the newsroom drama is so bland it's hard to care about those characters.
There's potential with some of those roles but it just doesn't work so it hurts the post interview part of the film.

49-Doll Face-Echo Bridge Blu Ray
So like 2 years ago a buddy bought this. Watched it with his then fiance and told me I had to see it.
Young woman inherits dead aunt's fancy apartment. Everything covered only 2 rules she must keep the aunts doll collection in the apartment. And never look the dolls in the eyes.
This is one of those would have made a great 20 to 30 minute short in an anthology film or modern day Twilight Zone episode but at 1 hour 17 minutes it is way too long.
Then the twist is revealed 6 miinutes before the end. Cool decent twist, not spoiling incase anyone wants to watch it is free on TUBI and VUDU currently. If the film ended right after the twist it would be a decent low budget modern horror. Nope it goes on a few more minutes and just makes no sense in those few minutes.
5.6 Cabbage Patch Dolls slightly changed to avoid a lawsuit out of 10

50-Mars Needs Women-MGM Midnite Movies DVD
So been slowly getting every MGM Midnite Movie I didn't own. Thought when I found this new for a buck I got a deal.
NASA gets a coded message from Mars that translates to MARS NEEDS WOMEN. Seems something on the red planet has caused all the children born for decades now to be male.
Mars sends a few troops to Earth to bring back women. With Tommy DISNEY STAR Kirk being one of them.
Padded to hell and back with stock footage of just long takes of people doing nothing this was made for TV and syndicated by AIP.
Yvonne Craig,Batman66's Batgirl,is decent as a scientist that Kirk is after. The rest of the cast is made up of faces I know but I have no clue their names.
Not a great night for choices in film
Mars Needs Women gets 4.5 stock footage marathons out of 10
