I’m in line for a pretty solid tax return this year, I’ll be filing my taxes about 90 minutes after my T4 shows up. Papa needs a new XBox!!!
Was gonna buy a laptop and XBox with last years return, bought the laptop and then decided I needed to take a couple weeks off work because my drinking was out of control so ended up using most of what was left on living expenses for the month. This year I get my Series X

I'm glad of the PAYE here. Wouldn't like to do all that tax filling in you do in the states. Always wonder what stupid people do.

There are whole industries that will file your taxes for you. Alternately, there are fairly cheap programs that guide you through the process. It's much simpler than it was even a couple decades ago thanks to electronic filing and whatnot. That said I do envy my friends who live in countries where they just take care of that stuff for you.

At the end of every obstacle and inconvenience is someone counting money they would not have made if not for that obstacle or inconvenience.

Doing mine as soon as my T4 is in. I work for the CRA and they're pretty adamant about us never filing late so I want it done and out of the way ASAP.

I've done self assessment (self employed) here in the UK and it seemed a lot more straightforward than what I know of the US system. Granted, most of what I know comes from The Simpsons so that may not be an accurate portrayal.

Have I got it right but when you get your pay each month is there no tax deducted, and you pay it all at the end of the year?

Have I got it right but when you get your pay each month is there no tax deducted, and you pay it all at the end of the year? I can't speak for the U.S. but in Canada there are deductions on every pay whether that be weekly or biweekly. I don't know if anywhere pays monthly in Canada. Ideally, a person should only get a refund or break even but there are many factors that can affect it. It also gets tricky for those who have more than one job. Often your job will tune your deductions to your salary there. However, if another job pushes you up into another bracket, you need one or both jobs to start deducting more so that you don't get nailed at tax time.

You get deductions every pay period, depending on your situation and tax bracket. This time of year you then get to openly weep at the amount of taxes you paid the past year when you get the W-2 (our end year statement). That is why I always do my own taxes, I don't like to cry in public.
