There's a good documentary on flat earthers on Netflix that doesn't take the piss out of them....much. it follows that guy who's name escapes me but apparently alot of flat earthers don't actually believe it, but enjoy the challenge of arguing there is.
I think the moon hoaxers are more depressing

Ask him to show a selfie close to the edge (no, not the U2 guitarist or Adam Copeland), or you won't believe him. Or rather, don't, come to think. Don't encourage the crazy. Edit: Always a classic:

My mother believes a lot of various conspiracy theories that makes it hard to hold a real conversation with her sometimes, but one time I idly asked her "You talk with many flatearthers?" and she paused, gave me a weird look and said, "That's a real thing?" I said, "Yes" and she goes, "Oh god, I thought it was just a joke..." heh.

That the Earth is round has been known since at least the 1400s, when Dante described a clearly spherical Earth in his work The Divine Comedy. No one in medieval Europe though the Earth was flat. Contrary to legend, Christopher Columbus did not think the Earth was flat.
Flat earthers should be ridiculed and mocked for achieving a level of stupidity unheard of for five hundred years.

Edit: Always a classic: Shout out to the flat earth documentary, I forget the title, where the whole narrative is them conducting an experiment to prove the planet is flat... then when the experiment proves it's round they immediately dismiss it and say the experiment must have been done wrong. Also shout out to the flat earth rap genre, because that is a thing.

Just a few corrections... Western Civilization has been aware the Earth was round since at least the ancient Greeks, with Eratosthenes doing a pretty good job of estimating the circumference of the Earth based off of shadows and with what they had available...and this was 200 B.C. The funny thing about Columbus was the debate on the size of the Earth, with the belief being that it was smaller than Columbus assumed it was, but that it was all ocean...therefore it was practically a death sentence to try to find a Western route to the East. And to be fair...those critics were correct given the sheer size of the Pacific Ocean, if you pulled out the Americas and connected the Atlantic to the Pacific, it is indeed an absolute death sentence...and it was almost a death sentence for Magellan's crew. But it truly is a marvel what humans were able to discover with the limited resources they had 2,000 years ago. Heck, even navigating the Earth only knowing that Longitude was a concept until the 18th Century is utterly mind boggling.

Without getting into specific details, my brother works for a company that handles such sensitive information and equipment that he and his employees are required to undergo annual background checks and psychological evaluations. If you have any charges on your record or any sign of mental illness, they will not employ you. With that said, many of his co-workers are conspiracy theorists, including several flat-earthers. Let that sink in for a minute.

Heck, even navigating the Earth only knowing that Longitude was a concept until the 18th Century is utterly mind boggling. Thank you for the extra info! I read a couple really good books, The Map Of Knowledge by Violet Miller, and a book about Anaximander by Carlo Rovelli that really illustrates what you said about how much was known in ancient times with such limited means.

I miss the days of being able to talk about Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, and UFOs with people that were simply "trying to have a little wackiness/mystery in their life" rather than frothing at the mouth batshit crazy. Me too. Conspiracy theories used to be something you could have fun with, now they're angry political statements. I use to love conspiracy theories. I didn't believe them but I enjoyed reading about them. Then over the last few years I've had several people I know start with the seemingly fun harmless theories go down rabbit holes that led them to some really bad places and I just can't find enjoyment in them anymore.

I fell down the flat earth rabbit hole during lockdown when I found out that the conspiracy theory was actually serious. At that point, I hadn't taken a physical science class since about the second or third year of college and it wasn't anything advanced. So well over a decade and basic and I could poke holes in their theories and models all day long. To my surprise, I then fell down the flat earth debunking rabbit hole and found most of my hole poking was spot on or pretty close. Those are some of the best done debunking videos I've ever seen. Check out Professor Dave Explains on YouTube for some of his videos on that subject.
It pretty much boils down to this, how does X work on your model? My favorite variable is sunsets, but you can use whatever you choose because they don't have a unified model that explains two different phenomena (i.e. seasons and tides, sunsets and phases of the moon, etc.). You know what does? The Globe model explains these occurrences flawlessly and simultaneously.
I've never encountered a real life flat earther. I thought I did about a year or so ago, as it was obvious this guy subscribed to just about every other conspiracy theory known to man, but I guess that was a line too far to cross.

as already mentioned, i really do miss the days where stuff like this was just someone having some quirks, instead now it usually means you're actually dangerous and gonna trigger the fight or flight.
used to be where you could be like "yo dude, i bet raccoons can actually talk" and people would be like "damn probably not but lets keep an eye on 'em just to be sure buddy". now if you hear someone say that, you know they're gonna tell you their wife is a raccoon and she cannot be trusted, super into crypto too.
