Interesting matchup is on the 17th next month where luchadoras La Jarochita and Lluvia will face yet to be announced opponents.

Canāt say itās surprising. Itās looked like it was happening for some time. Ospreay got paid money Okada will never see in Japan. That was that.
Itās why Gedo wasting time on SANADA, Finlay and Tama Tonga when they needed new stars was criminal.

He will be appearing at Osaka and Sapporo, that will be his farewell speech it seems.
His last scheduled match will be on next Wednesday at Korakuen

I read it as some changes will occur to the upcoming schedule so that he can have some farewell matches, likely with a formal send-off similar to Nakamura.

He was a given as someone who was going to get a heavy push and has ranked high on popularity polls many times. Gedo would frankly be a shitty booker if he WASN'T trying to do something with SANADA. Tama's singles pushes were a waste of time, ultimately, that much I'll agree on, and while pushing Finlay makes sense from a "let's try to recreate Jay White" standpoint, he's been underwhelming. I guess the question is going to be how the power vacuum is going to effect things. I kind of assumed Tsuji was going to have a strong 2024, anyway, and probably the other two musketeers, especially Umino, but now, probably moreso.

A few shifts following the Okada announcement:
- The NEVER 6-Man defense will now take place earlier, on 1/24 in Okadaās final Korakuen appearance. - He will now face Tanahashi one last time on 2/11 in Osaka. - He was removed from all other cards between those two shows, and details for his final shows on 2/23 & 2/24 are TBA.

Itās why Gedo wasting time on SANADA, Finlay and Tama Tonga when they needed new stars was criminal. I think I remember reading a few years ago that Okada was pretty much making close to $2 million USD a year in New Japan...but that was all before the drop of the yen and the mobile market that Bushiroad has to pay close attention to. Still reeling over the news, man. As for what NJPW "has" to do, now, they just need to move the schedule up on the young guys they're projecting to step up over the next couple of years: Shota, Tsuji, Ren, and the other recent returnees/graduates are about to have a whole lot of pressure thrust on them, but it's also a world of opportunity being presented to them, as well. And yeah, I'm not about to get on Gedo for pushing SANADA or Finlay; one was routinely one of the most popular acts in the company, the other has tons of talent and, frankly, is getting a lot of shit from people right now that has nothing to do with what's been some great work he's been doing. Tama was never my cup of tea as a singles act, but any potential harm from giving him time around the NEVER belt is fairly minimal. But yeah, if I'm Gedo I'm thinking of starting up a recreation of late 80s/early 90s AJPW: take a lot of the guys you still have who've been major faces of the past decade-plus or who are already a bit older (Naito, Shingo, Goto, Taichi, Ishii, etc.), build them up, but have it serve the purpose of getting the new generation over in a climactic clash (Umino, Tsuji, Narita, Fujita, Uemura, etc.); the timeline for such a move has certainly been pushed up, now.

I don't think I could trust Gedo to right the ship now. New Japan is losing guys left and right and they got no one who's ready to take over as the top guy not to mention he's having to be dragged kicking and screaming to actually put women on the show as he was against creating women's titles.
In a year they have lost Ospreay, Aussie Open, White, Robinson and now Okada as well as others who maybe leaving as well. This is not a sign of confidence to have with him.

Why would his stance on women on the show matter, given that most Japanese wrestling is built around separate promotions for each? I know DDT and some others mix it up more, but that has no real impact on how Gedo books the promotion itself. Plus, why do you think they lost the rest? That's basically next to nothing to do with Gedo's booking and infinitely more to do with a really down yen and rough Japanese economy, not to mention those guys leaving were mostly gaijin, who cycle out every few years in most cases, regardless. Okada is the one who sticks out given his homegrown status, but again, where does Gedo play into that given how much he's invested in Okada over the years?

Yeah, Gedo is far from perfect, but sometimes people don't realize where he falls as a cog in the machine that is NJPW/Bushiroad. He has the main say on how people get chances or are showcased, but items like Jay wanting to stop traveling to Japan because his wife is battling cancer or the yen being down and Bushiroad requesting more per appearance contracts and/or connecting flights to save money are completely out of his hands.

When I kept advocating for Tsuji over SANADA it is because of exactly what happened. It wasnāt time for a good soldier who is liked (allegedly) in Japan to get his turn on top. It was time for someone new, fresh and exciting to be established as a top guy in the company. What do they need right now more than anything? SANADA as a somewhat more credible challenger? Or a breath of fresh air to have been booked to blow the doors off the promotion? This isnāt revisionist stuff. Many people were saying it at the time of their title match. Gedo followed it up with the terrible booking for the young guys in the G1. Then being last minute additions to the Dome. Leftovers and afterthoughts.
The game has changed. Slow playing these builds isnāt going to work. Ospreay and Okada leaving is bad enough. Not having Shota beat Ospreay on the way out to end his epic run was an obvious mistake at the time. Okada is going to leave having spent part of the year beating on young guysā¦then it being dropped altogetherā¦and never having anyone get over on him in the least.
This is all on Gedo. Multiple fresh guys begging to be in major programs and title pictures. He put Finlay over Ospreay. He put Tama over Shingo. He left SANADA on top. The whole time you could see what was coming. He just passed on making lemonade out of the lemons he was handed.
They need a new head booker more than they need Okada

Step 1 sign Tsuji, Shota and Yuya to long term contracts so your partner canāt sign them away to have one match a month with Action Andretti
Step 2 the entire year is now about their race to the top.
Step 3 when they get thereā¦sign them to an even longer extension because cocaine never sleeps
