Over the years, I'm sure you may have noticed that the Royal Rumbles will usually follow a pattern. These included:
Crowded: The ring stays pretty full throughout. It's like a long battle royal with a new guy entering every once in a while. Examples: 1991, 1998, 2009, 2017.
Empty: Quick eliminations. People come in and out. It's like they're trying to get things over with. Examples: 1999, 2002, 2010, 2020.
Mass Elimination: Halfway through the bout, there will be a great purging. Usually, some guy comes in and starts dumping out everyone. The ring gets cleared and then fills up again for the ending. Examples: 1992, 1995, 2003, 2011.
So, which kind of Rumble do you like? Or, do you not have a preference? Feel free to explain below.

I think the ideal format is one where there's ample room for people to come in and do big spots and have fun moments, but it never just devolves into everyone one-by-one getting their shit in and there's still stuff happening in the meantime, preferably with the ring generally having a good few people in it but not getting overcrowded.

Just preference wise, I don’t like it when it’s pretty empty. This does make me wonder which rumble holds the record for going the longest without any elimination

That’s nuts. What happens if there’s a rumble and no one gets eliminated till like 20-something?? Make it happen Papa H

Prefer when the ring fills up. Have a soft spot for the 91, 98 & 09 Rumbles for that reason.

Also, the record for Most Guys In A Rumble Match At Once is 2009 with 15.

I’ve always thought of the Rumbles being in two different types, not exactly the ones you described:
-The ones where an early number lasts most or all of the way -The ones where there is a total turnover in the participants. No early entrant makes it near the end, the end of the match is all guys with high numbers

I really like my rumbles to have rings full of people, where you can look at the clock and go "wow Heath Slater's been in there 15 minutes WTF" and be impressed by folks stamina.
However my favourite Rumble is 2002 which is the exact opposite of this. But in that I feel that the pacing (its the only rumble where every interval is well over 2 minutes) means everyone gets a chance to shine. Or in Hurricane's position, be remembered for a joke spot!
Whereas I hate rumbles like 2010, where people are in and out quickly like jobbers and there's no flow or narrative.
1992 has a great overall story. 2002 is like a tag sprint. 2009 has a very crowded ring but every few seconds is either a big move, a near elimination or a big fan favourite entering the match, so it's huge on excitement.
But in general, I want people to last forever, and I want the winner to struggle to the win from 18 or lower. It should feel like an endurance win. Not Brock Lesnar walking in at 30 and killing 5 people in 2 minutes.

Punk cutting promos between him eliminating people was funny, but I don't think a mostly-empty ring should be the standard for Rumbles either. The first 7 entrants were mostly Punk fodder, then HHH just tossed out Punk in their first exchange. Later the entire midcard is eliminated by DX in about 20 seconds, and none of ECW's entries lasted longer than a minute. But most annoying is the build had all these storylines (Jeri-Show explodes, R-Truth/Jericho, Kofi's run, to name but a few) which had no bearing whatsoever on the match as they just eliminated folk before the person they were interacting with showed up. In the case of Show and Truth both were eliminated within 2 numbers of Jericho showing up, that's just very... ill thought out structure.

I don't like the Rumbles where the upper carders use the empty ring to hit signature moves and taunts.
I think it was 2002 or 2003 where RVD, Booker T, Angle and maybe Jericho or Eddie Guerrero each came to a relatively empty ring, hit a finisher and did a spineroonie etc
Makes no sense if the goal is to eliminate the opponents.

I didn't like the Rumbles where there are more than 9 wrestlers in the ring at any time.

I didn't like the Rumbles where there are more than 9 wrestlers in the ring at any time. I think 10 is max. A pair punching each other in each corner while still leaving enough space for the two freshest guys to hit big moves in the middle.

1992, 2001, and 2003 are excellent examples of crowded, empty then crowded again.
