Wow. What an experience. I'm desensitized when it comes to horror and nothing scares me, but this one made me feel uncomfortable and want to sleep with a light on.
The slow burn and the incredible sense of dread made this the best horror movie I've seen in a LONG time. Toni Collette's performance was excellent.

I really liked that movie. I really appreciate Ari Aster for not being afraid to get f***ed up with the themes and visuals of his movies and having amazing atmosphere in these. That's what Horror is all about to me. They should aim to disturb their audience.
And yes, I 100% agree that Collette's performance is a huge part of what makes this movie. Absolutely incredible.

100%. In fact her performance in hereditary is one of the last times I was floored by an acting performance.
Love the flick for all the reasons already stated. Love the family themes. Love that it aims to unsettle at the root. At the core.
I wish horror would get back to this in mass as opposed to the cheap jump scaring but eh iiwii.

I don't think I've ever laughed louder and harder at the cinema than the telegraph pole scene. Top stuff. Great film.

I have watched tons of haunted house-type movies, so I spend a lot of time going through the tropes checklist and rolling my eyes, but Hereditary was one of the rare exceptions that felt fresh and pretty suspenseful. It was really well done.

It does take a while to get going even with the telegraph pole scene. About an hour in it was moving at the same pace as a Roman Reigns tribal chief title reign but thankfully picked up in the last half hour. Midsommar is better though.

I don't think I've ever laughed louder and harder at the cinema than the telegraph pole scene. Top stuff. Great film. I laughed my head off at this for good and bad reasons. I was absolutely not expecting that to happen, and it made me realise this film was gloves off. That was my 'lean in' moment. Only thing for me is that the ending isn't that great, but if I took 'bad ending' as a reason to not recommend a horror movie, I would recommend zero horror movies. movie bored me to tears but I can agree with this bit. It does take a while to get going even with the telegraph pole scene. About an hour in it was moving at the same pace as a Roman Reigns tribal chief title reign but thankfully picked up in the last half hour. Midsommar is better though. See for me, I have the opposite opinion. I think Hereditary has actual scares in it, where Midsommar is all dread, no payoff, and massively too long.

I find queries like this bizarre. Googling this would have taken the same amount of time as writing this post. It's from 2018.

I saw this for the first time right after seeing the Paranormal Activity series for the first time and I couldn't help but notice that it was kind of the same story.
Also, when exactly did the "it's not a ghost, it's a demon, so even if you leave the house it'll follow you" trope start as a way of explaining why people don't just leave the haunted house?

I think actually with Paranormal Activity hahahaha

There aren't many moments these days where I remember where I was when I saw a movie in a theater, but the gasps from that telephone pole scene I will never forget. One of the most tense movies I've ever seen.

It has an effective seance scene, which is rare praise for any movie.

It has an effective seance scene, which is rare praise for any movie. I know some practising witches and it's apparently one of the most accurate movies ever made for this shit. That's not me saying I believe in it, because I 100% do not. But the charms and stuff they use in these movies are usually completely f***ing random, chosen to just creep people out generically, and make no sense for actual witchcraft, and Hereditary it was all stuff in the same... school of witchcraft I guess.

I need to rewatch this eventually. I liked it but watched it on little sleep so wasn't sure what was going on towards the end.

Which movie was scarier? Hereditary or Harry and the Hendersons?

It’s incredibly unnerving and Collette gives an amazing performance. The stuff they hide in the background is also good to watch out for if you rewatch.
