Wrestling has always been full of carnies trying to copy whatever the "hawt" thing at the moment is. How many "badass bald dudes in black trunks" or "look at how spooky I am as I no-sell everything!" douchebags we've seen over the years.
But then we have Blue Kane. He's cool.

I think it’s just now a shorthand phrase for “My favourite should win the belt and be the top star”, which is a mindset that has always existed.

It's the new "Wrestlemania Moment." Right. It's a reasonable enough thing, but just kind of forced when they harp on about it. I do think people overestimate how organic certain past Wrestlemania moments were, since yeah, of course they were trying to have a grand moment with a lot of them, like Andre and Hogan's staredown at Wrestlemania 3, it wasn't just some accident, but they don't let the moment speak for itself often enough. Similarly, if you do have a story playing out, you can try to give the audience the benefit of the doubt that they can follow it. Well, to an extent, anyway. It's true that sometimes, the audience needs to be led to the right conclusion until they get it, or else you get them kind of missing things, like who raised the briefcase during a ladder match in 1999. (REALLY clearly Bossman, but sometimes people still get it wrong.)

Has it really been applied to other people? I hear it a lot in reference to Cody, because that has been his story arc since returning to WWE. I haven't really seen it applied to anyone else. CM Punk and Drew McIntyre have both said they have stories to finish. The promotion around WWE 2k24 is "Finish your story." 2k24 isn't just advertising 'finish your story' around Cody? I haven't actually watched any of the ads for it.
I figure Drew right now is in full troll mode and is likely using "finish your story" for that purpose, but I could be wrong.

Finishing the story works for Cody since he’s been in the business for 18 years, had wwe doubt him, asked for his release and bet on himself, eventually built his own company, and THEN went back to the company that doubted him, lost his first major fight against Roman and now is the rematch to where if he wins he wins the biggest title in the industry that his father couldn’t win. I think Cody might be the biggest underdog since Eddie

So you're spoilin' for a fight that a boyhood dream comes true for these WWE Superstars on the grandest stage of them all, WrestleMania? Moments like these are a once in a lifetime and not finishing their story can be a career threatening match they can't afford to lose.

I'm still awaiting for the finish of that gripping story where Mike Knox didn't know why he kept beating up Rey Mysterio.

At least for WWE 2K24, it’s still tied to Cody as he’s the cover wrestler for the standard edition. Yeah but then you have AI Hulk and Stone Cold talking about their stories in the commercial. we must stop this AI Hogan before it gets into the internet and finds a way to replicate itself and build robot bodies, that future must not happen.

It's a fun tagline for a video game at least.
"You think this is how my story ends?" (Candice Michelle comes out, turns Cody into a woman with her magic wand)

I guess it becomes annoying when it drags on for two years and almost gets railroaded by a surprise Rock
But at least it's only been contained to Cody.

Appreciate the snark guys. Really wasn’t even remotely suggesting they cut off the legs off anyone or fans shouldn’t be happy. I meant it as a phrase and booking arc. But hey, I’m just looking for a fight. FW91 is SPOILIN' FOR A FIGHT! *AC/DC plays* (Speaking of annoying tropes...)

It does feel like more and more people are doing "I MUST WIN THIS TITLE" promos which dilutes them but also someone is going to be disappointed because it can't always happen. Like it feels like Gunther has faced a couple of guys who made beating him their whole story and identity and then like, it just didn't happen.

I don't think it's a trope yet, but I'm already tired of just Cody and the commentators overdoing it with regard to him. It gives me major 1996 Boyhood Dream vibes. Like, I'm sure Shawn Michaels wasn't the only wrestler whose boyhood dream was to win the big belt.

They’re not really using it as an independent phrase completely detached from Cody.

CM Punk and Drew McIntyre have both said they have stories to finish. The promotion around WWE 2k24 is "Finish your story." That's all Cody-centric, though. CM Punk and Drew McIntyre were both pretty clearly taking direct shots at Cody Rhodes when they referenced "finishing their story." And the WWE 2K24 game has Cody Rhodes on the cover, so it makes sense that "Finish the Story" is an integral part of the promotion. But it's not like Chad Gable is suddenly on screen saying, "I need to finish my story against Gunther!" or Kevin Owens is telling Nick Aldis that he needs a rematch with Logan Paul to " finish the story."
