For a long time, there were several wrestlers who had over ten or almost ten title reigns with the same title. World, Women's, IC, and tag. But with Triple H now booking WWE, that will get phased out eventually. He likes to book long reigns, and generally doesn't hot potato the belts.

I'm not a lover of long reigns anymore, if I'm honest. Wrestlers do (or should) defend more often than MMA or boxing stars, so reigns should be significantly shorter. Long reigns can feel special if the guy is very active in defending them, but Roman's kind of killed the concept for me. Brock, I was biased because to me he did feel like a special attraction so I was still stoked for his appearances, but if I'm being honest I wish he'd been around a lot more too. Punk's long reign worked because it was the first of its length in ages and he defended regularly, but I really feel like they should emphasize number of defences ahead of length. Plus, if you're wanting to pad a guy's stats to kayfabe make him better it's super easy, make their houseshows defences and track that. Also on another level, if you have one guy hog the belt for eternity, yeah it makes him look decent but it makes everyone else look on a grade below (even with Roman's interfering bullshit). Whereas trading the title around, while I don't wanna see it swap every month or whatever, at least makes the title scene feel stacked and competitive, especially when you've got a main event like now.
LA Knight, Roman, Cody, Punk, Seth, Drew, AJ, plus guys like Sami, Gunther, KO, hell even the likes of Miz, Shinsuke or Logan Paul, trading around a single title more quickly, is preferable to me to two belts that go forever with little change, and I think does more for the top of the card as a whole.

I'm just waiting for a promo where somebody says "I'm great because I was a 10-time whatever champion!" and their opponent's response is, "Yeah, and you lost it that many times too."

It sounds good when you're on talk shows or whatever, but I don't give a shit about how many times you've held a title if I can't remember anything about half your reigns.

I feel like there are too many long reigns these days and they should mix it up at least a little bit. As much as the WWE product these days has improved, it does feel a bit like you're just waiting for each Wrestlemania for anything big to actually happen.
You've had Roman and Gunther, which to be fair will both create huge moments, but then at the same time Seth will have had his for about 300 days come Mania along with Rhea for a full year and then you had the long ass Bianca and Uso reigns last year too.

It's a good thing definitely especially when you look back at the Attitude Era. Like what was the point in The Rock and Mankind swapping the title 4 times between January and February 1999?
Or The Rock winning the title at Backlash 2000 in one of the greatest PPV endings of all time only to lose it back to Triple H a month later? Then just a month after that The Rock won it back again.

Big E did that like 6 years ago: “You know, Ric Flair only became a 16 time world champion, because he lost it 15 times.” (Big E): “And that’ll be Charlotte in a month.”

WWE has definitely done an excellent job of making titles, and more specifically title changes, feel like a massive f***ing deal as of late but it is definitely time to shake things up a bit and have some shorter title runs.

Having the belt for a year made sense when you only had like 4 ppv's a year and one tv show a week.
Now that we have like 14-16 ppvs and multiple shows a week it just doesn't work.

Dating myself, but I remember being on those old Yahoo forums and everyone talking about how much of a big deal it was when Bret became a 5 time World Champion. Only Flair and Hogan had reached that mark previously.
I think Edge got to 10 in like 3 years.

WWE had like 6 shows back when I started watching and 4 PPVS and 3/4 of those Hogan PPVS Hogan never defended the belt.

Balance is big for all things because too far in one direction becomes grating and exhausting. We're pretty damn deep in one direction right now. Long reigns are gret when you have a consistent, coherent story you can tell. They aren't so great when you're running on f***in' empty, the title's barely defended, and it's being drawn out as this long run for the simple sake of being a long run. I think the difference in how people talk about Roman's run versus Gunther's is super telling on that front. But Gunther is built for this run in a way I don't think his successor will be, or the successor's successor. If they don't mix in some short runs, if people don't trade the belt a little bit sometimes, if all runs have to be this crushingly epic show of grand dominance, then it is going to wear

I think we need a bit of Column A and Column B.
A good long Title reign is perfectly fine from time to time but a few shorter reigns sprinkled in between doesn't hurt.
I'm not suggesting that the belt changes hands every 2 weeks like it use to in the Attitude era but not every reign needs to be a record breaking one.

I'm fine with super short hot potato reigns when it makes storyline sense and it's after a series of mid-range to long reigns.
The ROH Tag Title scene from 2013-2014 having some months with frequent belt changes really helped make that division hot and carried the promotion with SCUM fizzling out and its non-Steen participants having to be rebuilt from scratch.
