I was watching Hogan and Piper's infamous Age In The Cage match from Halloween Havoc 1997 the other day (I wanted to see if it was as bas as I remember; yep!), and when it got to the part when the fan climbed the cage, ran in, and it took forever for security to get him out of there, I couldn't help but think that the security f***ing sucked at getting rid of that guy. And, I think Doug Dellinger, WCW Head Of Security, was to blame. I remember there being quite a few other fan run-ins on Nitro. I've also heard some stories about him, like Bret Hart accusing him of falling asleep on the job, which allowed some fans to either sneak into a storage room and steal some merchandise or sneak into a locker room and steal someone's ring gear. (I heard both versions, so I don't know which one is true.) I've also heard that he tried to kick Ace Frehley from KISS out of an arena when KISS was supposed to play on Nitro because he didn't recognize who Frehely was. So, I have to ask: was he as bad at his job as I'm assuming?

Idk but we should have gotten him vs Tony Garea during the Invasion! Two guys who always broke up backstage brawls for their company.

Doug Dellinger was less useful than a weatherman. So many people invaded the ring…thankfully none had really bad intentions. LMAO

WCW had ring invasions all the f***ing time, and constant showering of garbage on heels. Dellinger was a f***ing atrocity

I always thought it strange that we even knew who Doug Dellinger was. Given how frequently announcers dropped his name, you'd expect him to be some kind of an onscreen character that fit the motif of professional wrestling, but no. Dellinger was just this middle aged guy with a pot belly who looked like a poor match against 75% of the people who bought tickets.

I always assumed he was a kayfabe head of security, I hadn't realised he was the actual WCW security man.
I don't know if that says more about him or me.

Doug Dellinger: frequently let fans jump the rails and get involved, but pulled Sting off of a cage so hard in a kayfabe spot that Sting tore his knee to shreds when he landed, ruining the upcoming PPV main event and causing six months of booking to be rewritten. Just a superb professional.

That guy looked like he f*** up anyone, including most of the roster. Dellinger looked like he could f*** up a box of donuts.

Just a superb professional. Wait WHAT?!?!?!?!?!??!?!!?!!?! At the Clash of Champions X in Feb 1990, Sting was scheduled to fight Flair for the title three weeks later at Wrestlewar '90. Sting and Flair had been friends, but early in the Clash show, Flair, Ole, and Arn, turned on Sting for taking the title match. Later in the night, The Horseman were in a cage match and Sting was trying to interfere by climbing the cage while people tried to stop them. When Sting got pulled off the cage by Dellinger and others, he landed awkwardly and blew out his knee - torn ACL, MCL, patella tendon - the whole deal. Many have blamed Dellinger for trying to pull down Sting for real rather than a lighter working pull that Sting could've controlled better. Well Sting was obviously out for months and they had to turn Luger back into a babyface to take Sting's spot and feud with the Horseman.

I know WCW was poorly run, but how someone so utterly incompetent had a job for YEARS even after injuring Sting is an enigma.

Wasn’t Doug Dellinger an actual Charlotte cop ? Not exactly a ringing endorsement for the Charlotte PD.

I know that when you picture a “Head of Security” in your mind, it normally draws an image of a really tough-looking bastard when the reality is they don’t quite look like that. However it’s the entertainment world and the mental image is the one we imagine and by that rationale, Dellinger looked as tough as a turd on a wet lawn. Even Ralphus would have done a better job. (Obviously, this is all from a kayfabe point of view).

I find it hilarious that Doug Dillinger ended up getting a few WCW video game paydays despite his lack of competence or presence in his role as WCW security.
