I watching an episode of nostalgia critic and he said this joke about Gene Hackman in Superman.
The man refuses to get into character 100%. He didn’t want to be the lex Luther bald, except a couple seconds at the end, and apparently it was a struggle to get him to shave his mustache.
Who else had this issue?
There’s Cesar Romero who refused to shave for the joker, and Henry cavil for legal reasons apparently, and had to cgi his mustache off.

Why do directors put up with actors refusing to get into character?
I mean, if I was a director and the guy I heard to be Lex Luther was refusing to go bald, I'd tell him to sling his hook and give the multi-million dollar paycheck to someone else. There's always another talented and popular actor out there.

Yeah he got fired, fled from the hotel and lived in the forest surrounding the film. Some of the animal people extras were hanging around waiting to be called and found him. They gave him a prop mask in case any of the important people came by.... and they did and they chose him for a scene... |

There's always another talented and popular actor out there. Could be the contract is prohibitively expensive to get out of. Could be too far into production to change it. Could be if you turn around to the studio, they'll get rid of you instead of them. That could be because of the differences in name value or whoever's contract is cheaper. There's lots of reasons, it's not that simple. |

There's always another talented and popular actor out there. I think back then, some actors were more important than the movie. If a star was on the poster, that could sell more tickets than any plot or special effect. Now, not so much. |

Brando was a weird case because if it was material he was engaged with and/or a director he respected he could generally put more into his stuff. It's hard to escape a sense that he was so natural at acting and could do good performances so easily that he got a bit bored of it as a profession at some point and only rarely got excited by later projects.
Island of Dr Moreau was an especially poor project given his daughter had committed suicide during production and he famously didn't get along with Val Kilmer. Between that and (according to a Fairuza Balk who had several conversations with him) believing the script made no sense, it's not really a surprise he just basically used to the production as an excuse to vacation and wear an ice bucket on his head.

The irony of this thread becoming all about Brando is in his earlier days, he was one of the first actors to bring method acting to mainstream productions.
