Deadspin 2.0 was objectively terrible, not sure it's ever the smartest move to tie current social events to sports. There is a reason ESPN and Fox keep their broadcasts fairly bland & neutral

I would disagree with your first point to a certain extent, but that's a long, long conversation.
The media business is ruthless and cold blooded. Good lord

Sports go hand-in-hand with current events, especially social events, and it's a fantasy world where they can exist separately.

Fired the writers that made it great under the guise of “no politics” then hired a bunch of nobodies who pretty much did the exact same type of content.
Guessing the story about the young Chiefs fan is what did them in. Good riddance.

I get the feeling we're going to see a lot of sites like deadspin shut down and sold to IP mills who'll just license their archives and comments sections to AI companies for training data.

Whenever I hear stories like this, I'm far less inclined to think "politics bad" as much as "VC firms continue to make the internet demonstrably worse". I get the feeling we're going to see a lot of sites like deadspin shut down and sold to IP mills who'll just license their archives and comments sections to AI companies for training data. On that same note, what are the odds that Deadspin 3.0 ends up being more AI-generated bullshit? Probably not zero.

I'm not a fan of Julie DiCaro, but I hate to see people lose their jobs like this...

The way I see Deadspin was in four eras:
The first era (2005-2008) under Will Leitch and then A.J. Daulerio was kind of this attempt at combining gonzo sports journalism with websites that were in their heyday like TMZ or Perez Hilton, which is why they sort of built this reputation as the gutter of sports journalism - a willingness to print just about anything. Sometimes that worked out for good, but often times it was kind of malicious and just done as a takedown of the athletes and coaches they were discussing.
The second era (2009-2013) was when Deadspin was at their absolute peak - biting commentary on sports but also with legitimate news being broken on their site. The Manti Te'o story and how it was reported should be taught in journalism schools across the country.
The third era (2014-2019) was not about being biting or innovative, it was just a mean, crass, and cruel site that focused almost solely on the political angle of sports. I get that sports, current events, and society at large are intertwined, but it was impossible to read an article on Deadspin that wasn't a veiled (or totally obvious) shot at particular political persuasions.
The current era (2020-2024) was a completely different website. It retained the name "Deadspin" but nothing about it was Deadspin. Just embarrassingly bad writing and reporting. It was put out of its misery.

Venture capital ruins everything it touches. This, repeatedly. All the flaws that happen to your favorite things and the cut in quality, the answer is always venture capitalists.

Whenever I hear stories like this, I'm far less inclined to think "politics bad" as much as "VC firms continue to make the internet demonstrably worse". Deadspin is proof of that. After everyone left a handful of years ago because Jim Spanfeller is a dumbass, they started Defector, which is a stable, profitable company that they are able to make a living off of.

It’s funny how that’s been happening more and more lately when there’s no pressure from rich assholes who don’t care about the businesses they’re owning, huh.
