Literally nobody could have slotted in better than Cody. Kenny would work better matches, sure, but Cody's 'prodigal son return' vibes had him instantly on top in a way that nothing could have matched. Mox is great and he's doing amazing work, but I think if he came back as Dean Ambrose again he'd lose a little something. Yeah Kenny coming in would not be able to "Slot in" to where Cody is. The story Cody is in only works for Cody as the guy that left the company because the bosses saw nothing in and he went and proved them wrong. Kenny is slightly similar but how many people even know he was in developmental? and even then the Kenny Omega requested his release (not to mention 2005 Kenny and 2024 Kenny are two vastly different beasts) Mox/Dean doesn't have that story because even if he wasn't THE GUY... he was definitely a main event player and again left because he wanted out.

I think half of what makes the storyline compelling is that Cody not only left to prove he was worth a top spot, he helped build WWE’s biggest competition in decades. Anyone who didn’t have those same credentials wouldn’t have had the same impact. It’s like hypothesizing about who could’ve been the third man in the NWO if it wasn’t Hogan.

Kenny's time in WWE developmental can also best be described as a cup of coffee. I think he was in Deep South for only a few months and quit. And given DSW's less-than-stellar reputation at that time, I can't say it's surprising.

imo, it would have to have been another ex wwe guy. Cody's "spot" thrives on a redemption story arc imo. Imagine if Braden Walker had turned up at WM38 and knocked Seth Rollins Brains out.

I think Cody was the most uniquely qualified guy for this.
That isn't to say Omega wouldn't have killed it, because I do think he'd have done very well for himself, probably with an AJ Styles-like trajectory, but Cody is basically Mr. Presentation in a way that few in modern WWE really can be, out of either a lack of eye for it or due to not being given that trust.
MJF would have done well, I feel, but I think that AEW is where he needed to mature his act. The MJF of now has a lot more depth of flavor than where he was before, as much as I enjoyed scoundrel MJF, too.

Kenny is the only non-WWE person that would be a big enough deal to me.

Better than Cody? To me no one would be. They strapped the rocket on Cody and made him the face of the company.
Now who would be fun to see if the WWE and get a solid push for me would be MJF and Kenny. I could see Kenny getting the AJ Styles treatment and there's nothing wrong with that. MJF would be an upper card guy.
The one that I think would be fun would be Danhausen but he can only be in NXT. Shawn books NXT just right that he would make Danhausen a huge hit in NXT

Nobody. And it’s not that I don’t think others in AEW could do it, it’s just that Cody’s story is such a good one to tell. There’s layers to it, with dusty wrestling in the garden and not winning the world title, there’s the dusty connection with Roman from NXT, the fact heyman worked with dusty in WCW, and brought dusty into ECW. That’s stuff a creative team can’t write, because it’s real and the fans know it’s real. And even WWE can’t f*** that up.
I can’t wait to see Cody win at mania. In my wrestling fandom him winning is up there bret winning at WM X, Austin winning at WM XIV, Daniel Bryan at WM XXX, and Eddie guerrero beating brock to name but a few.

In all honesty and this isn't a shot at the AEW roster, in this position Cody is in there isn't anybody who would be better.
