Here’s my recap from last night’s live event in Rockford.
-Byron Saxton was the host and ring announcer. Dude is talented and should be used more.
-Bianca Belair, Naomi, and Becky Lynch defeated Damage CTRL (Iyo Sky, Kairi Sane, and Dakota Kai). Asuka must still be recovering from injury, and Becky was a weird choice for this match instead of Bayley. Good opener with Becky pinning Dakota. All of the babyfaces got great reactions.
-Sami Zayn defeated Shinsuke Nakamura. Glad I got to see this match. I recently interviewed Sami, and we talked about his match with Nakamura in NXT from years ago. As Sami was leaving the ring, Gunther started making his entrance. The two had a stare down in the aisle, building some tension for WrestleMania.
-Gunther defeated Jey Uso to retain the IC title. Damn, Jey was probably the most over person on the whole show. Cody and Rhea might be the only ones who got bigger pops than him, but it’s very close.
-Awesome Truth vs JD McDonagh and Dominik Mysterio of Judgement Day went to a no contest after Damian Priest and Finn Balor interfered. New Day made the save, and Adam Pearce came out and restated the match as an eight man tag.
-Awesome Truth and New Day defeated Judgement Day when R-Truth pinned JD after hitting the Attitude Adjustment. Truth got the best reaction of his team, while Dom got major heat every time he tagged in.
-Omos and MVP came out, and offered ten thousand dollars to anyone who could take down Omos. Odyssey Jones of NXT accepted the challenge. Typical big man match (1980s style) with Omos pinning Jones. Odyssey Jones surprisingly got a pretty good reaction leaving the ring than when he entered.
-Rhea Ripley defeated Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler to retain the Women’s World Championship after pinning Shayna. Crowd was hot for Mami (she needs to turn babyface after WrestleMania). The most memorable part of this match was Rhea threatening to give the stinkface to Nia (like she did in the viral video from the other night), but Shayna stopped her. The then begged Rhea to give her the stinkface instead (think Matt Hardy and Tori Wilson from years ago). Nia then attacked Rhea, and gave Shayna the stinkface instead, causing Rhea to gag. Good stuff.
-MAIN EVENT: Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins beat Jimmy Uso and Solo Sikoa of The Bloodline when Seth pinned Jimmy after the stomp. Both Seth and Cody got huge reactions, with most of the crowd singing along to “Kingdom”. My lady was a little surprised that we all knew the lyrics. After the show, Seth got on the mic, and dropped a few “shoot comments” about The Rock claiming he made wrestling cool again. A “Rocky Sucks” chant broke out.
And that’s pretty much the show. Had a great time. It was my birthday too.
