Wolverine has been referred to as The Wolverine from time to time. And in his first appearance even. "The Batman" makes him seem more mysterious to me. As if they aren't sure if he's actually a man or a giant bat creature people are seeing. "Batman" seems more familiar. Yeah, "The Batman" would be what people call him early in his career when they don't know what to make of him. Then later when he's more publicly known, he's just "Batman."
