DAZN streaming service ends deal with AEW

The DAZN sports streaming service ended its deal with AEW just a year into its three year deal. The service had an option to end the deal after the firsr year and opted to do so back in January. The deal was so under the radar that it wasn't until this week that discussion of the deal ending happened.

In an odd twist, DAZN's own employee Steven Muehlhausen noted that there was no blame on AEW, writing on social media, "DAZN and AEW had a three-year deal with DAZN having the right to drop them after the first year. DAZN exercised the option that ended the deal on New Year’s Eve. The reason DAZN dropped AEW was because except for All In, the PPV numbers were below expectations and not enough people were watching (except for select episodes and the first month of Collision) where AEW was available internationally so DAZN ended the deal early. Want to make PERFECTLY CLEAR, to me it wasn’t AEW fault the deal wasn’t renewed. I ran the wrestling social side for DAZN. AEW bent over backwards when I asked for interviews and liners from talent to promote their major TV shows and PPVs."

AEW had been distributed internationally via TrillerTV (formerly FITE) with a special AEW+ subscription service before the DAZN deal came along. DAZN did very little to actually push the AEW content when they had it. The Triller TV subscription service (which does push AEW's content) is still a viable way for international fans to subscribe to AEW's series if they are seeking to do so.

Triller TV and YouTube as well as PPV.com also distribute AEW PPV events. The 2024 Double or Nothing PPV is available for pre-orders already.

maybe i'm out of the loop but i've only ever seen occasional commercials for DAZN with boxing. I had no idea they even did wrestling.

Legit never heard of DAZN. I get my streaming from Triller for my non-WWE stuff so...

I never quite understood the DAZN deal. Was it in markets that didn't have Fite/Triller? Because if it wasn't, why would anyone choose to change from Fite to DAZN when Fite does the job perfectly? Plus DAZN is at least twice as expensive as Fite so if you only want to watch AEW, you're going to choose Fite.

FITE was an easy go-to and it had lots of other wrestling on it so it was also a place I already had my credentials to buy indie shows and stuff. I think the addition of DAZN was to try and get some DAZN people to convert over, but if there wasn't much promotion on that side and AEW fans already uying PPVs didn't see any need to go use them instead, it was never going to work out. Steven Muelhausen is the guy with the weird scary twitter avatar though that's my only other contribution here.

Think it was Nordics, Baltics and France in the end basically. Germany was the first one to move back to Fite/Triller from that deal. They never uploaded Rampage on time and apparently they never broadcasted it on time either. Also when they took over from Fite, they did this annoying thing when Dynamite went to commercials in the US, they started rolling their own women's champions league and mountain biking commercials.

Oh yeah, once they got Rampage uploaded some time around Sunday evening or Monday morning, they'd clipped the picture in picture's out, so it was like a badly edited WWE Raw that they used to sell to smaller markets in a shorter format.

Though I didn't know they had the ppv's there as well as those were available on fite all the time.

I didn't know DAZN did aew ppv's until "all in" last year, looked at trying to buy that ppv via them until I saw how stupidly set up it was and gave up and went through youtube to buy it.

I only knew of DAZN from 2K community creations. I had no idea they were a streaming service.
