I've been watching a lot of old stuff recently (wait 1989 isn't old!) and I got to a Saturday Night's main event in October 1989 and Zeus accompanies Ted Dibiase to the ring for his title match against Hulk Hogan. What is the story behind this ? did Ted just "hire" Zeus for muscle ? or was it ever explained ? Thank you!

Yeah, Money.
Probably to hype Survivor Series 89 which hyped the No Holds Barred PPV.
Needed to team him with someone credible, and Macho had already lost at Mania, lost at SummerSlam, would lose at No Holds Barred so they gave him to another good worker who had a history with Hogan to break it up and not Bury Macho.

Ah, but Hogan had plenty of time to catch up with that, I'm sure. Burying Macho, I mean. But yeah, that Survivor Series team was strange in general. Okay, so Zeus still has the issue with Hulk*, fine. DiBiase just reeked of reheating a 1-2-year old feud that was long finished**. Similarly, Powers of Pain were handled by Demolition earlier in the year, who was now focused on the Heenan Family. Which was why I would have had a Hogan/Beefcake/Duggan/Jake team against Savage/Zeus/DiBiase/someone else. Maybe Perfect? That way have Hogan get counted out or cheated by Zeus and/or Macho somehow to rebuild heat for No Holds Barred, then make Perfect one of the survivors on the heel side. Gets him ready for Hogan. (I'd say he gets to BEAT Hogan somehow due to heel chicanery, but of course that wouldn't work for him, brother.) Meanwhile, I think Demolition would have fit in with Warrior somehow, and it puts them against the Brain Busters (in theory), and/or Andre and Haku. Not to say Hogan, Jake, and Demolition weren't a great lineup of course. * - How DID Zeus re-emerge after losing at SummerSlam, anyway? I forgot. ** - He had moved on to Jake, who was on Hogan's team...but when he was made captain of the heels, it felt like his beef was with Hulk again.
