He did get to say "shit" on TV finally so what more is there for him to do??
Seriously, it's always rough when an injury makes a wrestler retire. In an ideal world it would always be a wrestler's free choice to retire.

Man, this is heartbreaking if it's really the end of the road for Chuck, who's always been one of the more underrated guys out there, but if it is then I'm thrilled he got to go out with one more really good match to put one of his best buddies over, and I'm thrilled he'll be around drawing a steady paycheck and still in the industry, hopefully one day delivering us a new up and comer he can christen "No Gimmicks Needed" Steve the Samurai. So yeah, most guys don't get to go out on their own terms, but if it this is the end then at least Chuck got a pretty sweet sendoff, which is often more than you can ask for in this industry.

A long and storied indie career really sets you up for notihng in a post-ring career except pain and the kinds of damage that can make a normal working life suck. If he can work out as a backstage guy, that's the kind of stuff that makes it good AEW is around. Dude has done amazing work but always the kind that was never going to get the right kind of attention.

The particular injury that Excalibur mentioned (osteochondral lesion) is a tricky one. I have a feeling he opted to try physical therapy at first and it didn't help. What I don't understand is why it took so long to finally get surgery unless they initially tried a less complicated/invasive surgery at first and then THAT wasn't progressing as well as it should.
IF there are no complications and a cartilage graft works (either donated from himself or a cadaver) he could be back in a year but that's a big if. This particular injury is at bottom bone of the ankle joint that causes damage to the cartilage as well.

His pal, Capt. Shawn Dean, should let Chuck name all the "local competitors" (a.k.a. jobbers) as a cosolation.
I cannot wait for House of Black to squash Adrian Dill Picklesbly and Scoot Tatum on Collision this summer.

does this go back to that PWG injury? when he hyperextended his knee or something like that doing a dive, I think he got caught in the middle and top ropes and went forward so it bent an insane way
