Apologies for double posting but this is probably the best example. I bring you the Earthbound ad campaign: I know this is how Nintendo and many people like to look at it now, but I think it was a little more than that. 1. RPGs were still very niche in the United States, while they did have a loyal fan base, it was still a niche fan base. It's the reason why gave us Mystic Quest, a game developed directly for Western Audiences which *STILL* didn't help things. The popularity of RPGs didn't take off until Final Fantasy VII and all the sudden everyone loved RPGs. 2. The graphics for the game don't do it any favors. This is the era of pre-rendered graphics, had the game come up 2 years before, it may have stood more of a chance. But unless you had an established character and brand for your game, it's probably not going to attract many new eyes. 3. The gigantic box gave the impression that this was an SNES add-on. This was again something at the time that most people just weren't down for, as things like the Super Scope didn't sell well. 4. While the game did have a stupid marketing campaign, it wasn't that much different than what Nintendo was doing at the time. You had the disgusting Yoshi's Isle ads where a guy eats until he physically explodes all over the other patrons, Nintendo would have inserts of someone stepping on real bugs included with their games, so it wasn't like this wasn't their direction at the time. 5. I hate to say it...the game just isn't that good. It's good to an extent, but I could name numerous other RPGs from that era that I consider better. I'm not saying it's a bad game, but as a kid playing this in 1995, it wasn't going to thrill me that much compared to what else was being released around that time. Again, it's unfortunate that the game sold poorly, but I think there were multiple factors outside of their advertising. I think the reason it gets brought up is because Nintendo published it themselves, which they usually saw a great track record of. I still think it's a good game to a certain extent and deserves to be played by more of an audience, but I just think there wasn't a it going for it in 1995.

I remember a French ad for a car that did a fantastic job of making their potential audience look like superficial jackasses.
It was a series of quick cuts of various preppy dudes a woman was seeing as part of a speed dating thing and they were either showing off their wealth or saying stuf flike "I believe beauty is a gift". Then it cuts to a rugged looking dude, who I feel most women likely would find attractive (think Alan Wake in the new game but a bit more built)... but then he says "I watch soccer on TV... I snore..." and apparently, that's supposed to be a good thing that shows that he's not superficial? Because having a personality is shallow, now,
I mean say what you will about the other suitors but at least their vain attitude still showed they have some sort of interests at least. Oh and then he suggests ditching the speed dating because I don' tknow, modern things bad or something, and the woman smiles when she sees his car while a narrator calls it an "external sign of internal wealth", which has got the be the most hyopcritical tagline for any product I've ever seen.

That Crow image gives off real Jared Leto Joker vibes, so yeah who ever thought that was a good idea to release for a first impression? They're bad at their job.

I like to believe that these commercials are the reason Quiznos went out of business (at least in my neck of the woods)
Whoever thought it would be good to associate THESE Eldritch Horrors with food products needs to be fired

Every Poppi Soda commercial comes off like the most pretentious f***ing shit ever, it doesn't make me want to try their soda, it makes me want to never see their product again Whenever I hear "pretentious cola commercial", I think of this...

Apologies for double posting but this is probably the best example. I bring you the Earthbound ad campaign: basically any Play it Loud ads where Nintendo tried to be edgy 90's was a failure. and the actual video ad was a guy puking.

Hell this is Quizno's being ahead of the curve the Spongemonkey's are one of the early Internet memes. Alos they were memorable enough they brought them back when Quizno's reopened.

Whenever I hear "pretentious cola commercial", I think of this... Man dared ask: what if we gave baby's first surrealism a mild headache? And lo, it wrought with it a confusing fury.

I like David Lynch's movies and TV Shows, but he probably shouldn't be directing soda commercials. Who the hell was this horrifying ad supposed to appeal to?!

Obviously the slave mentions in this are indefensible but I’ve been working out for years and I can’t even figure out what they’re trying to say the work out is. I get 1st = 1 rep and 2nd = 2 reps but then it stops making sense. The f*** are these guys on? 1st Round: 1st = 1 rep, 2nd = 2 reps, then 2nd Round: 1st = 1 rep, 2nd = 2 reps, 3rd = 3 reps, then 3rd Round: 1st = 1 rep, 2nd = 2 reps, 3rd = 3 reps, 4th = 4 reps, then 4th Round: 1st = 1 rep, 2nd = 2 reps, 3rd = 3 reps, 4th = 4 reps, 5th = 5 reps, and so on basically the 12 Days of Christmas where you keep repeating every exercise each time you move to the next level and with a name that distasteful, you just know they've got a "Schindler's List" workout “To commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day, click to find our best tips on how to lose weight and get thin!!!” (I am so sorry…)

I have a degree in advertising and have worked in the field for my entire adult life.
The “worst ad campaign ever” they always teach you in school is “not your father’s Oldsmobile.” There was no swaying the young crowd toward Oldsmobile, and it alienated the brand’s target demographic who was heavily steeped in tradition. It was an ad campaign that accomplished nothing and actively harmed the brand.
Surprisingly, what is consistently taught as one of the best is everything Sega did in the early ‘90s - specifically “what Nintendon’t” and “blast processing.”br] In my opinion, Earthbound for SNES was the most poorly marketed product I have ever seen. A book could be written about how they missed the mark at every single turn and did everything they possibly could to sabotage the game’s sales.
To a lesser extent, I feel like the marketing for the Emperor’s New Groove failed it.

I recall the ads for "Kick-Ass" made it look like a teen comedy with slapstick. In reality, the film was more of a dark comedy with action elements.
