Usually back then when a company made a newer model of a console, it’s done to reduce manufacturing costs as the company is putting most of their effort into a newer console. But the Model 2 Genesis was made ONE YEAR before they made 32 bit consoles.
I do know that if you watch the end of the Gaming Historian’s video of the Mega Modem, he says that when Sega made the model 2, they removed the nine pin extension port so I guess that’s the reason.

Sega made a lot of strange decisions with hardware.

Honestly if you compare the 1st generation Genesis/Mega Drive with the 2nd and then even more egregiously with the 3rd, it's kind of impressive how much they were ultimately able to shrink down the hardware over time (same argument goes for the Nomad really), though obviously you're talking a substantial difference in build quality between the three too.
Also as an aside, did anyone actually prefer the original Genesis controller over the six-button? I love the feel of the six-button but the three-button was seriously the Xbox Duke before it was cool.

The Model 2 also removed the phonojack on the front and hte volume slide right?
I never saw a model 2 in anyone's home until the early 2000s.

For years I read that if your Model 1 came with Sonic it had hte lockout, that made some EA titles not play,Populus being one of them. I got a Genesis the month it hit the US. Then that one broke and i went to Service Merchandise got the Model 1 with Sonic. Mine didn't have hte lock out stuff.

By the time I got the genesis the smaller model was out, but it came with one of the three button controllers. I actually kinda miss those giant things.

i had a Mega Drive 2, and also a Mega CD 2, the way you had to join them together was strange, they connected next to each other rather than on top, and it was big when put together.
i only ever had one game for the Mega CD, Road Avenger, i never ever saw any Mega CD games in any shops ever.

SEGA weren't making good decisions during that time frame.

I love the feel of the six-button but the three-button was seriously the Xbox Duke before it was cool. I honestly like the classic Genesis controller for simple games like say Columns or Sonic since it's got bigger face buttons and D-Pad. Anything with more complex controls (especially fighting games) then I'm going for the 6 button controller. The Model 2 also removed the phonojack on the front and hte volume slide right? I never saw a model 2 in anyone's home until the early 2000s. I might have been the opposite. I grew up having a model 2 and always thought for the longest time that was the original system and did not realize until early 2000 that it was the second model and not the original.

I had both.
The six button joypad was great.

Mega Drive II was 100% to get a console on the market to undercut the SNES price point even further
