Lately, I have been running a lot more than before. I believe one of the factors is that video game music can be quite motivating when exercising. For example, I used the bonus CDs that came with "Guilty Gear X2: Accent Core Plus" and "BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend." Oh, I can definitely say that Daisuke Ishiwatari has the perfect soundtracks to get someone's blood pumping.
Which brings me to the subject. Does anybody remember that PS1 games included the soundtrack on the game disc? Because those games were released in CD format, you could put them in a CD player and the songs will start playing. The first time I noticed this caught me by surprise, but then it led me to seeing if any other games had the soundtrack on there. This was a long time ago, by the way. However, recently, I listened to the "WCW vs. The World" soundtrack on the disc. I also checked out my "Tomb Raider" copies and some of the tracks were dialogue, sound effects, and some of the soundtrack.
I also read that Sega CD games had the soundtrack on the discs as well. Is that true?

Off the top of my head I remember Mortal Kombat Trilogy and the first three Twisted Metals (I don’t remember if the 4th did or not) would play in the CD players.
That Paris theme from TM2 and the More Human Than Human/Jingle Bells mashup from TM3 were goofy songs that made for fun listening.

I remember Street Sk8er on PS1 had the soundtrack on the CD itself and thats what got me into ska music for a bit.

I think the PS1 release of Symphony of the Night had a track that wasn't used in game but could be played in a CD player.

I think the PS1 release of Symphony of the Night had a track that wasn't used in game but could be played in a CD player. Yeah, I wanna say there was a brief intro from the guy that voiced Dracula, followed by a few minutes of gothic-sounding music.

I'm pretty sure Fighting Force has it as well and it somehow makes it difficult to emulate the music. The soundtrack is also amazing, which is contrary to the assumption that without Yuzo Kushiro a faux Streets of Rage wouldn't sound as good.

You could listen to the wrestler themes on WWF In Your House for PS1.

Monster Rancher and Destruction Derby 2 had this, I believe.. Monster Rancher 1 is another instance of having a track that's completely absent from the game itself.

And as a follow up note, PS1 Monster Rancher games are keen as hell, especially if you're still sitting on stacks of CDs. The recent rereleases lose that functionality, but the core combat/training mechanics are still pretty good and a nice contrast to Pokemon.

You at least can put in all sorts of discs virtually, which is how I found out that they added some monsters in MR2 that had been dummied out of the actual US release, in addition to the game fixing some of the glitches, like your monster taking twice as much lifespan damage as it was supposed to from being sent to learn moves, along with I think making one or more of the stress-reducing items work correctly when it was previously virtually useless due to a bug.

I think that was the first game I discovered the feature on. I remember renting it way back when. I think I was testing out what some types of discs would do if I put them in other players. I remember putting it in my stereo, and then a song started playing.

I also read that Sega CD games had the soundtrack on the discs as well. Is that true? To answer your question on this, not just Sega CD but many Sega Saturn games work like that. I remember hearing ALL JP Saturn games worked that way, but I've only tried it with one. I own three JP Saturn games but got the other two when I had the Saturn put away in storage (still do) so I can't speak for those. But I have Saturn Bomberman's OST saved on my computer, ripped right from the disc of the North American version, so I can speak for that. Many CD-ROM games have what's called "Redbook Audio", and that's when devs put music tracks (and even cutscene audio) on the disc as separate tracks for the console to read, instead of coding it into the game (and typically having to rely on the console's sound chip to function). It was easier for many devs to just have a line of code that said "if [event/location], then Play Track [#]" instead of all the work digitizing and coding the track to fit with the game data. I know there were some Dreamcast games that had fun with it too, having little bonus tracks. NFL Blitz 2001, for example, has a VEEEEEERY long track on it that's literally every line of commentary dialogue in the game, including some that are extremely situational or are unused in the game. And Digital Pictures (the company behind Night Trap, Sewer Shark, etc.) would include a parody of The Beatles' "Revolution 9" as an audio track on almost all their games.
