Looking back at the last year, we once again lost many well known celebrities (and perhaps loved ones). Among the celebrities and other famous people are Gerald Ford, James Brown, Joseph Barbera, Don Knotts, Jack Palance, Chris Penn, Bruno Kirby, Peter Boyle, Aaron Spelling, Darren McGavin, Robert Altman, Red Buttons and Steve Irwin.
Let's all take the time to reminisce about these people (and anyone else who may have died, like friends or family members).
Unfortunately, my memory of Gerald Ford revolves around paying close attention to his health. Being a newspaper reporter in the Palm Springs area, where he lived, he was a hot topic this year. We spent all year on Ford Watch, and it finally came in the last week of the year. Covering the funeral was also a surreal moment.
As for the others, I'll remember McGavin most thanks to his role as the dad in Christmas Story. He was great as the old man.

"And what's this, Enid?" "Don Knotts" "And what were you trying to say with this?" "I don't know. I just like Don Knotts"

Every year it seems like there's a bunch of people who die in the last week of the year. What's up with that?

Was Pat Morita this year or last? Anna Nicole Smith's son, Daniel (well, he was on the reality show). Cory Lidle.
Chris Penn and Steve Irwin were the big ones for me. I immediately watched Reservoir Dogs and Best of the Best upon hearing about Penn.

God, so many amazing folks lost last year. It's real sad. I'll add Sven Nykvist to the list. My fellow film dorks will likely recognize the name instantly - he was a great cinematographer. His work on the films of Ingmar Bergman and Woody Allen was phenomenal. I don't think he'll ever be matched.
To borrow a phrase, Peace the Spork Out to all the good people we lost last year. God damn will we miss you down here.
