I've been to Congress and the LoC and Supreme Court before btw, so I'm content to skip them this trip unless time permits.

I did a long weekend in DC a few years back. The main three museums I hit while I was there was the Museum of American History, Museum of Natural History and the Air & Space Museum. All were fun but very crowded, touristy places, so you know what you're getting into with them. When I was a kid I took a tour of the J. Edgar Hoover Building (FBI headquarters) with a lot of focus on FBI history. It was enjoyable but it was a long time ago and I don't know if they still do that. If you're looking for something to eat, I'd recommend Ben's Chili Bowl for Half Smokes and Milkshakes. The one place I wanted to go to but didn't get the chance was the Municipal Fish Market (or "The Wharf" as its website calls it). If you like seafood check it out. I tried to include a link to the cities WikiTravel page, but because the URL has a comma in it it won't do it correctly. So just go to Wikitravel.org and type in Washington, DC and check it out.

The Air and Space Museum is so much fun. Highly recommended.
Georgetown is a very beautiful neighborhood with lots of good restaurants.
Also, the International Spy Museum is a lot of fun.

The National Archives is really neat. Has original versions of several documents on display including the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.

Eat at St Anselm or Ocean Prime if that type of fare is up your alley. Two of the better restaurants I’ve ever been to. Obviously the American history can’t be missed. Still amazes me every time I come back

St. Anselm has got great food and service. The last time I was in DC was for work, so I didn't get to go sightseeing. I've never had a chance to get the National Archives, so I personally would vote for that. Have you had a chance to get to the different memorials? I was amazed at the sheer scale of some of them. Pictures and TV really don't do some of them justice on how freaking massive they are.

I have fond memories of visiting DC. I was a junior or senior in high school I think, and went with my family.
At the Air and Space Museum I spotted a beautiful kinda gothy asian girl across the hall and actually gathered up the nerve to go talk to her which is way the hell out of my comfort zone. She was there with her family too. We ended up hitting it off, and went off on our own. Neither of our families wanted to visit the Holocaust Museum, so that's where we headed. After that sobering experience, we rode the carousel on the national mall.
Alas she was from New York, and I was from Michigan, and we went our separate ways. Though we did keep in touch a bit on AIM.
I do recommend the Holocaust Museum. It isn't fun, but I'd call it essential to visit.

I went to the American History, Natural History and National Gallery today. All great and I'm still amazed they're free of charge. The highlight was probably when I asked was asked to participate in a survey at the American History Museum about a Latino history: ... Her: What exhibit stuck out to you
Me: Probably... Tito Puente's jacket
Her: And why did it stick out to you
Me:.... The Simpsons...
