This was one of the ideas that helped BANKRUPT Circuit City. Basically Divx discs were disposable discs that a customer bought for $4.99 at Circuit City and once you put it in your Divx player, it was only active for 48 hours and at that point,it stopped working and then you threw it away. While it was more convenient then renting movies, you had to hook it up a telephone line (it had to have access to the Internet for it to work) and it had very dumb anti piracy measures. Also, apparently all Circuit City employees had to have one in their homes so they can sell the product to customers. Imagine explaining to everyone in your home why your Divx player why it has to have a whole lot of wires connected to it. Also, in the year 2024, VERY FEW people don’t have wireless internet so these players are very much obsolete anyway more than DVDs. I just love how reading one of the comments online that was made by a customer by an employee in 1999 or so that DVD players are going to be obsolete thanks to Divx. Give it more than sixteen years. Also, in one of the videos that are online, a Divx salesperson says: “It’s highly unlikely that Divx would go out of business.”

I used to work for Sears. I compare Circuit City’s Divx idea to Sears brain fart of a rewards program called Shop Your Way Rewards. Both sunk their respective companies and Sears cashiers were very reluctant to sell them to customers while some didn’t do it entirely even though they had to.
