Do I need to play Silent Hill 1 before this, or is it like Resident Evil 2 and Assaassin's Creed 2 where I'm best advised to just jump in here? you can just hop in but don't miss 1 or 3 either

You do probably want to play 1 before playing 3 though. 2 and 4 also have some connections but it's just superficial on both ends, you really don't need to play one to get the other at all.

I've been playing for around 7-8 hours and I'm almost done with the first part of the Hospital. Despite the increase in length, it's honestly been paced very well, and doesn't feel like too much new content.

I ended up deciding to pick it up, partially since was able to get the deluxe edition for like $20 off from Green Man and I got a new gaming PC recently I hadn't really gotten anything major for yet. Not played a ton so far, left off when you reach the apartments, but so far am really digging it.

Just make it have only one ending and have it be the ending with the dog.

Looks like PH looks normal and not the roided bodybuilder they made him later.

This is way more eerie than Resident Evil. Probably more to do with me being completely unfamiliar with the series. The only game I’ve ever seen played was Shattered Memories by the Grumps. Never played one myself.

Never played one myself. This is like the House Beneviento section in RE8, but it's the entire game. I don't think I'll make it.

Just beat the hospital and it's the highpoint of the game so far where gameplay and exploration wise it feels superior to the original. While it's going to take time for me to judge the cutscenes compared to the original, the part where {Spoiler}{SPOILER: CLICK TO SHOW} Maria "died", I think I liked more than the original. Great stuff and again Luke Roberts is f***ing killing it. Probably the best performance in a game I've seen in ages. My only complaint right now is that the combat is starting to wear on me. It's well done and despite James smoother gameplay, it's the most I've felt evenly matched with a single enemy in a survival horror game since probably RE7. But it does get to be much to where I wish it was easier to run because there are a lot of enemies for the amount of time and effort it takes you to kill one. Maybe it will be on repeat playthroughs where I have a better layout of the environment.

We've now reached the "No, see, the flaws are what actually make it great" level of discourse. The purists have lost, Silent Hill 2 Remake has now reached Team Silent status.

It's kind of genuinely shocking how good this game is. Basically everything was working against it and while it's not perfect it's by far the best Silent Hill's felt since 3 (other than maybe Shattered Memories but that's such a unique thing it's hard to even quantify it as part of the series) and it would not be hard to argue it's the best it's ever been.

Beat the prison and am starting the next bit. The prison is probably the worst part of the game and a good example of more not equaling good. I wouldn't necessarily call it bad though, just a 6 compared to the hospitals 9.5.
My thoughts {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{SPOILER: CLICK TO SHOW}
I agree that it does have a lot of enemies. Part of me wants to say that it's prison and it should feel like there's a fight at every corner. But the sense of isolation in the pitch blackness is also a charm of the original prison.
Part of the issue is that there are a ton of spider mannequins that crawl on walls. But they don't attack you that often, so maybe they were going for constant unease?
But, yeah this games biggest issue for me has been the combat focus and being unable to run in most cases. It can work and does make me feel at constant unease and tense when it does but other times I'm like "just let me explore and take in your damn atmosphere that your artists worked really hard on!" If they dropped like 15% of the monsters in a patch then it would be perfect.
Some positives from the prison: it probably has the best use of creepy sounds that you shouldn't be hearing, the non cell bits, and James smashing his head when falling into the gallows.
The Abstract Daddy boss fight was great. I love how there's hints in it that show the comparison to James and Angela's father, and the game dropping the music and going silent when you squeeze into the closet where she hid from her father to show how was her safe place was a brilliant choice.
The Labyrinth is greatly improved so far. Turning the head puzzle into an MC Escher style surrealist box was a cool idea. I also loved how the town even manifests James's cubicle.
I'm torn on Maria. I currently vastly prefer the original but I wonder if I'll eventually come around to her performance. The use of lighting in the scene where she's alive again is the most "this is like a dream" the game has felt but her performance dragged it down.

Made it to the Historical Society and still really enjoying the game on the whole but maaaaan I kind of actively want them to patch out like half the enemies. At a point the Nurses, Lying Figures, and Mannequins stop being scary and just start being annoying, and the game's well past that point by now. Either have less of them or make them less tanky.
