Stephen Sommers, the director of The Mummy, The Mummy Returns and Van Helsing will be directing the next big toy-to-big screen adaptation of the 1980's version of America's Moving Soliger G.I. Joe for a 2009 release.
Rumors are also flying around Mark Walberg and Jason Statham will be starting in this movie, with Walberg to play Duke.

But most of all, Sommers quit GI JOE last week due to the most cliche pair of words in Hollywood. "Creative Differences" Then again, would GI JOE fans want the director of VAN HELSTINK working on their movie? P.S. - I love Statham, but he would f*** a pretzel for money. I mean, he worked a Uwe Boll movie.

The studio wants Whalberg, but Marky Mark isn't interested. Anyway, its what I'm hearing from my pipeline.

I-...uh...er... .... now I feel stupid and embaraced. You spelled embarassed wrong too. If it weren't for your love for John Morrison, then I'd have to report you.

"Creative Differences" Then again, would GI JOE fans want the director of VAN HELSTINK working on their movie? The producer, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, wanted to do an "international" version of GI Joe, because it's too American or something (he's commented in the past in those regards); he wanted Action Man and other stuff and not a traditional Joe team. I think early on he didn't even want COBRA, but he changed his mind about that thankfully. From the sounds of the Variety article, Sommers just went to the heads of Paramount, pitched his idea right to them and they hired him on the spot. And they hired a writer, so this thing is in full gear now. And IIRC, di Bonaventura wants Wahlberg because they worked together on SHOOTER. Heck, just watch the scene early on where Danny Glover visits Mark Wahlberg at his cabin in the woods - I SWEAR that scene is lifted from the comics, where Hawk tries to recruit Snake-Eyes onto the Joe team.

Well, if you read my SHOOTER review, you know I was quite....meh about it. Anyway, I'm just telling you all what I know and heard. I asked my guy right after that VARIETY news came out, and its what he told me. International G.I. JOE isn't a bad idea. I mean, COBRA is a world-wide danger, and well, JOE agents around the world makes more sense, right? Plus it would help sell the movie more overseas then Americans having guns and blowing up everything around the world in sight (unless Paramount wants a straight-version of TEAM AMERICA). Either way, Whalberg still turned down JOE. He's still hurting from committing to that one would-be movie franchise that was DOA.....you know, PLANET OF THE APES?
