I've seen people in overrated discussions confuse overrated with just disliking. While I haven't seen in it the thread too much yet, I think that happens a lot. A film that's liked doesn't mean it's overrated. Films that get a ton of critical praise by critics and/or the public can be made arguments for overrated, long as the reasons can be argued for.
Now going off that, I'd have to go with Grindhouse on this one. A lot of people loved it (well the critics and those who saw it on theatres), but I just didn't get it. Well I "got it" all right, you're tributing/making new twist on the B-movies of old, but come on. B-movies were b-movies because they didn't have a choice. Their budgets were poor and as a result so were many of their effects and plots resulting in it's cheesiness. While you can definetly love 'em, I don't see a point in making a "tribute" to them, and using a 50-mil plus budget to reenact that. Plus the audeince for INTENTIONAL b-movies has never existed, so there's no reason why the studios shouldn't have been surprised at it's bombing.
That and the films themselves weren't all that good to warrant the praise anyway. Death Proof has waaaay too much convulted dialogue, that I cared little by the time the chase scene came (the only really good part of it). Planet Terror relied on super make-up gore and explosions, and didn't even do it to be likeable.
Enjoyable yes, but not great, or even very good. Just a big inside joke for Tarantino/Rodriguez and those who could point and say "Hey! I got the joke!"

Aware it's just opinions, but not quite sure why people are mentioning Transformers. Doesn't something have to achieve lots of positive reviews and such to be considered overrated later on? ' Formers didn't gain many rave reviews. Yeah, it made lots of box office cash, but that was a give in no matter how much it was going to stink. Something like 300 is understood, what with its many positive reviews, and they weren't really justified. Ratatouille is my overall pick. I just had a hard time getting into it, moved too slowly and nothing really happened to make me care. Finding Nemo can't be matched by the Pixar gang.

Its not a true double feature but more of a glorified anthology movie. You know what a true QT/RR double-feature Grindhouse is? RESERVOIR DOGS and EL MARIACHI.

Sicko.
I didn't even see it, most likely never will, I'm just basing this on my seething immeasurable hatred of that fat, blowhard, slob Michael Moore.
Not being very objective here, am I?

While 300 is a pretty obvious pick, I'll go with American Gangster. For all it's praise and reputation, if you compare it to The French Connection or Serpico, you'll find that it barely gets to the nitty gritty. Josh Brolin is severely underrated and Denzel just does his usual smooth talk "My Man" character. Russell Crowe is awesome as usual and Ridley Scott will probably get a Best Director nomination at the Oscars. However, the movie as a whole does not live up to the impending hype and just does not feel as together and climatic as most cop and gangster films should.

I'll go with 300. I bought it on DVD, and have watched it once. I agree with what has been said on here, but also there was so much more they could have done with Xerxes. What he did at the end to Leonidas should have been in the movie.

So is this thread basically "Name movies you didn't like that others did"? Actually I think this thread is basically people talking about how they don't like 300...for whatever reason. I thought it was highly enjoyable and combined old age fable/"hero story" epics with a new age look. It felt like classic storytelling with an ultra-violent, visually stunning twist. Granted it's all opinion but I feel 300 deserved every last bit of praise it got. The most overrated movie of 2007 for me was "The Host". One of the most horribly paced movies I have seen in a long time. It started off wonderfully then it was plagued by what seemed to be 25-30 min patches of unparalleled boredom. I watched it with a group, it put one of them to sleep and left all us wanting our money back.

Continuing with the trend here, I'll say 300. While visually stunning, I was just sitting there in the theatre going "Well this is okay, but not super great or anything"
I think my Mom summed it up best when she watched it...
"Oh look there goes another arm, oh and a leg, ooo a whole head even."
I also didn't think Hot Fuzz was all that great either. I was expecting a riot, but instead felt underwhelmed.

So is this thread basically "Name movies you didn't like that others did"? My dear, what does the term Overrated mean? I think 300 has some merit, but is it as good as the box office and people think it is? No I don't think so. Thus, "overrated" in my opinion. Since everyone has crapped on SPIDER-MAN 3, no one can say its overrated, but one can argue that its underrated.

Just for your side comedy thread break here goes....
Ohh boy it has to be "Whos your caddy?"
All the praise it got! I just didnt see it.
I love how it skyrocketed straight to DVD sales. I saw it at Target.
If you want help with the landfill to put copies in I'll gladly help dig. I just gotta push these copies of ET the Atari game off to the side.
You know people there was a comedy movie that came out before about Golf. Its actually funny. Its called Caddyshack.
Go rent it.
Alright back to your serious talk.

Far as 300 goes, I saw it, and while I appreciate the special effects and the violence, for the pure joy of blood and guts, and though the Battle of Thermopylae is oen of my favorite historic battles, I could not see ti as the epic people demanded. Take away the special effects and the blood, and while the story, historically, is compelling, the adaptation does stray from the historic record. I get the whole "based on" aspect, but as a history nut, it bugs me when you CHANGE THE ENDING TO A FACTUAL EVENT. It's like re-doing the JFK assassination, and having him just get wounded.
Also, watching it, I kept hearing a line in my head from the movie Airplane. "So...you like gladiator movies?"

My dear, what does the term Overrated mean? I know what it means. I stand by the definition I gave. I dislike the term "overrated." In some cases it's used as "overhyped" (which itself can mean different things), sometimes it's "popular movies you dislike," sometimes it's something different I can't think of at the moment. I think the term "overrated" is overused and...overrated. Considering most critics didn't especially care for it or thought it was mediocre ( www.rottentomatoes.com/m/300/ and www.metacritic.com/film/titles/300?q=300), it seems the people who went to the theater to see 300 and "overrated" it found the movie to be underrated by the critics.

Movies can be overrated by audiences as well as by critics. Ask anyone who's been unfortunate enough to been dragged along to My Big Fat Greek Wedding or Tyler Perry crap. It may not have been a critical darling, it still got 60% on RottenTomatoes. That's more than Transformers or Rise of the Silver Surfer, both of which I enjoyed more than 300.
