My dear, what does the term Overrated mean? I know what it means. I stand by the definition I gave. I dislike the term "overrated." In some cases it's used as "overhyped" (which itself can mean different things), sometimes it's "popular movies you dislike," sometimes it's something different I can't think of at the moment. I think the term "overrated" is overused and...overrated. Considering most critics didn't especially care for it or thought it was mediocre ( www.rottentomatoes.com/m/300/ and www.metacritic.com/film/titles/300?q=300), it seems the people who went to the theater to see 300 and "overrated" it found the movie to be underrated by the critics. So what exactly is your point? Should I say OVERSTATED, OverLIKED? Maybe OverWatched? Will you write a complaint letter to Premiere Magazine for their "Most Overrated Movies Ever" list they did years back that included 2001? Hell, write another letter to Slate Magazine for calling THE SEARCHERS "the most overrated film of all-time." Over-rated is Overrated. As for 300, notice that I wrote "box-office" and "people." I didn't say critics. Read before thinking next time because I refer to audiences as people, and its a pretty popular movie. I don't think 300 deserves its popularity, but thats my opinion.

The Searchers>>>>>>>>>>>>300
in terms of quality. Most overrated film of all time is Around the World in 80 Days 1958, I don't know why it won the Oscar.

Is there a Judd Apatow backlash now? Superbad/Knocked Up seems to be the second most popular choice in this thread.

Pfft, how about Chicago? Does anybody even remember it now? Exactly. Hell, the current Oscar bait contender is ATONEMENT, and I can safely predict that in 20 years, it won't be remembered. While I predict that ZODIAC will be, along with NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN and so forth. Which is why they won't win the Oscar.

Well The Departed did win over the movie that everyone claimed was a lock (Dreamgirls)...Oscar bait can be defeated.

Dreamgirls was oh, so, so, LONG.
And I felt every minute of that marathon of a movie.
The only other movie that I have willingly watched and felt every minute was Superman Returns.

I can definately relate to you on both. Seriously, Richard Condon is a great dramatist, but he should stay away from musicals.

Hell, how about THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH in ole 1952? Greatest Show on Earth won, because they weren't going to give the Oscar to a movie that completely blasted McCarhtyism and the Hollywood blacklisting. That's the only reason I can come up with, as to why High Noon did not win the award for Best Picture.

I just want to restate that while I did pick it as the most overrated film of the year, I thoroughly enjoyed Grindhouse. The logic as to why and how they made it is still kinda baffling to me, but I did enjoy it. Well, Deathproof at least.
While a lot of the dialogue killed me; the chase scene, casting of hot chicks, soundtrack and Kurt Russell as Stuntman Mike were all pretty damn good. For a lot of reasons though, I didn't think it was great, but I don't think it was bad. Just kinda convulted.

So what exactly is your point? That for every person who thinks a movie is overrated, there are also people who think it's underrated, and that I dislike the term "overrated," partially for that reason. More often than not, I see overrated used as a way to denigrate something popular because it's used as some big, generic, all-encompassing term to imply that the people who like something are wrong. To use one of those magazine examples, 2001 is one of my least favorite movies. I cannot stand it. So then the people who loved it would be thinking I underrated it. I don't consider 2001 overrated, it's just a well-liked movie that didn't live up to the hype for me and I don't like. Other people liked it, so good for them. Right. The term "overrated" is overrated. Glad we agree. ;D

I think it's more of the people using overrated too much (which I agree with). The actual term can be valid, but it's not always used as so.

Let's find a politically correct term for movies we don't like. "Overly observed" is my pick ;D Or how about Over-liked? I personally think over-rated and liking are not the same. For example - I like David Beckham, but I think in terms of hype and the skills he brings, he's overrated.

You know what I'm getting bored of? No. And I don't really want to guess. Oh, you answered your own question. Apparently I don't need to guess anymore then. I did answer your question. You asked two questions. I answered the one I felt most pertinent. I did not realize I was supposed to reply to every single comment made to me in your reply. I will keep that in mind next time. Your previous three suggestions of "OVERSTATED, OverLIKED? Maybe OverWatched?" are all the same as overrated to me. How about "Movies you didn't like as much as everyone else - 2007"?
