Ive no problem with the makeup. If you were to fall in a fat of chemicals youre highly unlikely to come out white with green hair, that works in a comic but not on a big screen. What if he did fall into the vat however, and was hideously scarred instead, thus causing the psychosis and he hides the scars with over the top make up? same back story, slightly more realism

There's always the possibility Batman ends up making it permanent.

I always thought that 1989 Batman's Joker didn't really have the discolored flesh because of the chemicals, but rather from the botched plastic surgery he got afterwards. Which seemed a little...teensy bit more believable. But barely.
Oh well. It was still awesome. As will this movie be.

I just had a REALLY scary thought... What would the Joker look like if Joel Schumacher were still directing? ?

;D Did anyone ever see that MadTV sketch they did for Batman & Robin? I don't have the clip, but I remember it had Tommy Tune as Batman, Liza Minelli as Poison Ivy, and a bunch of other gay stereotypes rounding out the cast. (I was kind of a homophobe in my younger days, sorry)

What if he gleefully jumped in a vat of chemicals!? That's hilarious. I would mark hard for that. But the coincidence of his skin bleaching and his hair turning green would be a little too much after he's already chosen the look.

in my opinion, i think the make up looks a little more grittier and scarier then if his skin was bleached white.

According to co-star Christian Bale, Ledger's portrayal deviates notably from previous interpretations. “It’s a much more anarchic, punk rock, almost junkie version of it... He’s that kind of psycho kid that just will do anything and has absolutely no conscience and morals – I think they’ve done a real nice job with his look. It’s certainly a whole lot more dangerous; there’s a bit of Clockwork Orange there, a bit of Sid Vicious, a whole lot of great, anarchic personalities blended within The Joker.” Credit: TotalFilm.comAnd furthermore: Michael Caine on the subject of Heath Ledger's Joker:
"[He's] beaten the odds and topped Jack Nicholson's performance as the Clown Prince in Tim Burton's 1989 Batman. He's gone in a completely different direction to Jack. Jack was like a clown figure, benign but wicked, maybe a killer old uncle. He could be funny and make you laugh...Heath is like a really scary psychopath. I did one scene with him and he was ready to go and had to come up in a lift and raid our place. I didn't see him for rehearsal and when he came out of the lift he was so incredible I forgot my lines. He frightened the life out of me. ... I'd never met him before. He's a lovely guy and his Joker is going to be a hell of a revelation in this picture." Credit: The Melbourne Herald Sun

I think they're trying to make Joker look "gritty" for the sake of being gritty. I really hope he still has the over the top-ness swampmeat was talking about, maybe without Prince music but still constantly cracking jokes and just making batman feel uncomfortable to psyche him out like in the Arkham Asylum comic. Either way it still looks like it'll be an awesome movie.

Yeah, I want the Joker to actually be funny. I think that's something even the comics have forgotten in their attempts to make Joker edgier and more deranged.
I love the "homicidal artist" angle they gave Nicholson's Joker. It allowed a psychological reasoning for his wanton killing sprees and complimented the other aspects of the character very nicely. I think I'll enjoy Ledger's portrayal, but I'm a bit worried they're going to veer away from other Joker portrayals and therefore ignoring the things that made them work.

Bale mentioning Joker being more like A Clockwork Orange character (more than likely he's referring to Alex) has me even more excited for this.

He has HALF the brain Batman does! Does this mean Joker will crap his pants during the film? Or try to attack Batman with scissors?

And bonus, Gary "Comissioner Gordon" Oldman played Sid in that movie, so if anything, that touch should be interesting to "cinephiles" anyway. Edit: To whoever wants it -
