What I mean by that is, New Year's is supposed to be the bigger holiday. It's the changing of the calendar, celebrating newness and starting over, and Christmas celebrates the birthday of a person who may or may not have actually existed. But Christmas has overtaken New Year's in terms of holiday importance because of its overexagerrated pageantry (ala Steve Urkel opposite the Winslows on Family Matters).
You notice how December 25 is the last of that day of the week every year? For example, this is the last Tuesday of 2007; Christmas is more-or-less an observance of the final week of the year, and this seven-day period is more-or-less a second Hanukkah for those who use the Gregorian calendar.
Just thought I'd throw that out there.
