In this week's Wrestling Observer Newsletter, I read that 1982's winner for "Most Disgusting Promotional Tactic" was Bob Backlund being WWF champion.
Can someone clue me in as to why a Backlund world title reign would be tasteless?

It disrespected Eddie?
In all honesty I don't know.

Wonder if it has anything to do with the controversial finish between Backlund and Greg Valentine in November of 1982.

I think it was because his reign was duller than dishwater.

From what I've heard, there was actually a pinfall counted. Backlund was covering Valentine, and the groggy ref, who had just been knocked out, made the three count. However, he was apparently so dazed and confused, he thought that Valentine had scored the pin on Backlund, and handed "The Hammer" the belt, declaring him the winner.

I was just going from memory.

I don't know but I have heard that Vince wanted to give Backlund a punk rock gimmick after he lost the belt to the Iron Sheik, now that would've been comedy.

the real question is:
was Bob Backlund's 1982 WWF title reign misused by WCW?
