I have seen Shane Douglas's ECW matches when he was in his prime period and I think they are way over rated. I've seen the legendary speech which Douglas gave when he threw the NWA World title and proclaimed himself the ECW World Champion.Douglas called himself the best wrestler in the world when he gave a scripted-shoot promo while leaving ECW for the WWF in 1995. Douglas was never a world calibre wrestler, he would never be able to carry a company like WCW or WWF on his shoulders (and yes Douglas claiming to have made ECW big is bullshit!). Shane Douglas was always a crybaby, he never made it big in WCW so he would shoot on Flair for holding younger talent down, and he never made big in WWF, so he shooted on the Kliq and Vince McMahon. Now guys Shane Douglas didnt have the in ring skills to be a huge success, I agree that Douglas had decent charisma, and his promos which were shoot style were a no-no in the kayfabe world of WCW and WWF during the mid 90's. I think he became popular in ECW, not because of his talent but because of his talking and he just became over because of cheap heat, and because Heyman who made him a star in ECW, Heyman the one who was/is the biggest kayfabe killer in the history of professional wrestling. So what do you have to say about Shane "Self Proclaimed Franchise" Douglas!

Shane Douglas was pretty good.
And hell, the Iron Shiek used cheap heat to get over. He was still awesome (and please, don't everyone jump to make a humbling joke).

hmmm partially true...he was booked very strong in ECW many many times, and he held those big shoot promos, and was involved in some stuff where he didn´t belong in just to get him more over (f.e. Dreamer/Kimona/Beulah lesbian angle)

Guys Shane couldn't get over anywhere else. He was a strong champion in what was a very regional promotion that once it became a national promotion he left for money and big surprise didn't get over

I agree with the origianal poster, to an extent.
Shane put on some decent matches, but he was hardly the 'greatest wrester in the world' that he claimed to be (especially at a time when Bret Hart was world champion in the WWF).
I remember seeing a 'legendary' 4-way match featuring Douglass, Chris Jericho, Pitbull #2, and 2 Cold Scorpio. Douglass was easily the least impressive wrestler in the match.
Shane's promos were pretty strong, but I agree that his reliance on cursing at a time when cursing was taboo was indeed a cheap heat tactic.

I am not the biggest Doulgas fan, but have to say that he could always put on a good match, and got tons of heat on the mic. As far as being over rates, I don't think so, he had alot to do with the growth and success of ECW, and was over in WCW, as far as the WWE Dean Douglas fiasco, maybe we could all forget about that, though even there he was IC champ
