I was just thinking how he literally defended it every week for a long-ass time in '97-'98. I seriously remember it being the longest reign I ever witnessed.

He held the 5 times between December 1997 and June 1998. His longest reign was 2 months 8 days.

Well, at that point, he was trading it off with Benoit and Finlay.
And...there was absolutely nothing wrong with that. One of the best feuds of 1998.

Those series of matches felt special, and they really were. It was probably the feud that began introducing me to idea that "hey...this 'pure competition' style wrestling ain't so bad!". Just wish I had been a bit more experienced as a fan at the time so I could've appreciated it all more fully, since I didn't really get a full appreciation for that style until quite awhile later.

He beat Disco Inferno for the belt, then he lost, then beat Rick Martel, Fit Finley, Chris Benoit and Scott Steiner for the belt.

He beat Disco Inferno for the belt, then he lost, then beat Rick Martel, Fit Finley, Chris Benoit and Scott Steiner for the belt. There were a couple of "phantom" title switches in there as well. Booker dropped the belt to Benoit at a house show, and then regained it at another house show the next day. Benoit then won it back again the following day, and then dropped it back to Booker the day after that. WCW never mentioned the changes on television, but they did acknowledge them in their official title histories.
