I just finished reading The Rise and Fall of ECW, and it was pretty good. And after reading The Death of WCW, it seems to me that wrestling has always thrived on "industry changing" things. Vince McMahon, Eric Bischoff, and Paul Heyman, all made their contributions that changed wrestling from what it was to what it is today. And now TNA has been striving hard to make come up with new stuff to jolt audiences. And I started wondering to myself, what are some changes that future promotions could make that would further revolutionze the industry?
Two major ones, I suppose, would be to run shows in a seasonal format and to unionize wrestlers. Both have been talked about in the past, but never done. And it is hard to say if either one could be done succesfully. But I think any promotion that did both of these things would instantly become THE place to be for the wrestlers themselves. A chance to have gauranteed rights, and to have a few months out of the year to spend with their families and heal injuries, would probably lead to a very happy locker room. Unfortunately, it could also lead to lax attitudes toward ring performance.
Another big change would be to bring real women's wrestling to the states. Women's wrestling has never been taken seriously here, and that is partially because it has never been afforded the kind of respect it deserves. A promotion that brought in top women from the inidies and japan would certainly be different, to be sure. But whether American audiences would be accepting of treating women wrestlers as equal to them men is also hard to predict.
Another change that I think actually should be done right now would be to enforce serious drug testing. While yeah, many wrestlers have lost their jobs over their "personal demons," the drugs I am referring to are roids. This move could be self-defeating, as it would remove some of the herculean supermen like Batista or Lesnar or even guys like The Rock and Goldberg from television. But it would also lead to less untalented hosses who have nothing but alot of muscles. It would also likely lead to healthier performers who don't get injured as much due to their bodies being overburdened with too much muscle, and I for one would not mind seeing fewer monsers with backne.
I am sure that many will disagree with these notions. Some might agree. But nonetheless, I am just asking for input on some major shake ups that could actually change the face of wrestling even further from what we see every week right now. WWE has ridden the tide because it flows with these changes, but there are some that even they are not willing to make that could lead to another, future promotion ousting them. Any further suggestions?
