Was there ever a kayfabe reason why Benoit switched to Raw to go for the Heavyweight Championship? I'm gonna guess there was a plan to have HHH and HBK in the main event of WM, but they needed the actual Rumble winner to be part of it as well....

Was there ever a kayfabe reason why Benoit switched to Raw to go for the Heavyweight Championship? Closest kayfabe reason to speak of is that he was sick of getting screwed around by Heyman as SmackDown GM.

I kinda always thought it was cuz Eddie was champion and he didn't wanna fight his friend, but that wouldn't be the Benoit thing to do.

Eddie became champ after Benoit left for RAW. Storyline reason for the switch was at the Rumble Flair confronted Benoit and told him he would never win the big one. Real reason was Trips needed someone to make him look good, other than Michaels.
Would have made more sense for Benoit to stay on Smackdown, as his story going into the Rumble was Heyman trying to keep him away from Lesnar and the Rumble being his only chance for a title shot. This was really the beginning of RAW being pushed as the top show at the expense of Smackdown.

Anyone else remember the epic encounter Brock and Benoit had on one SmackDown? It was for the WWE Title, and was where Brock debuted the Brock Lock. I remember how much this match was hyped, to the extent that the FBI had a betting stub set up. One thing that really stuck out during the skit was A-Train (a member of Team Lesner at the time) betting against Brock.
It was a really hot time for Benoit and I have to say I was a little dissapointed when he moved to RAW. I was really hyped to see a rematch between the two.

I remember him saying the night he debuted on RAW that he wanted to beat the best WWE had to offer at Wrestlemania, and since the rules don't specify which championship you have to challenge for at WM, he jumped to the "best" side.

That was during the time where Benoit had beaten A-Train on a few occasions beforehand, right? I love little continuity bits like that. And Benoit/Lesner was an excellent match.
