I never really thought about this until now, but it was ECW on TNN that shed some light to TNN about how good wrestling can do ratings-wise at the time, so they jumped on the WWF's ship when they had the chance to offer them a new home for RAW (and eventually, Heat). From there, "The Nashville Network" eventual became "The National Network", which eventually became "Spike TV", which we still have today. Hmm...

if you go ALL THE WAY back to the start of time, we could all be brothers and sisters.
Best not to think about things that could've had a million complications

No. WWE was the start of Spike TV. They changed their name IMMEDIATELY after announcing that WWE was coming to the network. TNN wouldn't give ECW the time of day by the end.

To be fair, they changed from TNN (The Nashville Network) to TNN (The National Network), not to Spike TV yet... They changed it to The National Network in September of 2000 (Same month that RAW came to TNN)... Then later, in 2003, the network changed to Spike TV (and later, just Spike)... ECW was what TNN was using as a justification for having wrestling on their channel, though, a sort of guinea pig.

Anyone remember when Spike Lee threw a hissy fit over the name change? They planned this huge special to celebrate the debut of Spike TV...then had to show it with all the logos blurred out while the case was ongoing. I thought I was watching a WWE DVD!

And when they switched from the Nashville Network to the National Network, that was them laying the seeds for Spike, because they pretty much completely changed their image from country/western to a broader audience, but a lot of it was still aimed at men 18-49.

Remember Paul E. Dangerously (Heyman) throwing a fit on the last episode of ECW on TNN because he felt ECW was constantly getting crapped on by that network?

Paul Heyman put it best, "ECW was CBS/Viacom (owners of Spike TV) showing WWE that wrestling would work on their channel."
That said that, it was TNN became The NEW TNN and then SpikeTV because CBS/Viacom already owned both CMT and MTV which aired music and lifestyle shows. That made TNN a competitor within its own company and had to changed. The change to The NEW TNN came during ECW's final days and before RAW went on the air.

Spike TV also gave us such classics as "Gary the Rat" and "Striperella". You know that Pamela Anderson will do anything for a buck, but Kelsey Grammer? Actually the show had a pretty decent cast, but come on Kelsey, if you needed the money that bad you could have sold merchandise on ebay
