I'm currently in college, and one of my classes is Advanced Composition. One of the things I have to do for the class is this posting; it's basically a forum where the instructor post a topic, and the class has to write a response about it. One of the topics he posted was, "What is your favorite words?" I chose the word "perfect" and said the reason I like the word was because of Curt Hennig, who played the gimmick Mr. Perfect. After I was finished writing, I figured you guys might enjoy what I wrote about him. So, I'm going to post it for. I should point out that I wrote it in a way for people who don't really watch and follow wrestling to understand because there are people in the class who don't watch and follow wrestling. Anyway, here it is:
My favorite would have to be perfect. I just like it. I like saying it; it has a great sound to it. I mean, the first sound it "per." That's a nice, soothing sound, like the sound a cat makes. The next sound is "fect." That sound is a little, but it manages to blend well with the "per" sound. Another reason why I like perfect is the first thing I think about whenever I say and/or hear the word: professional wrestling. Now, I know what you're thinking: what the hell does the word "perfect" have to do with pro wrestling? Well, I grew up watching wrestling. I've been watching since 1990, and the main company I've watched is WWF (now called WWE). One of their top wrestler was man named Curt Hennig. He was a very good wrestler; he could put on good wrestling matches and was very good at talking and giving interviews. Hell, he even held the World Title of a promotion called the American Wrestling Association, which was one of the top wrestling companies in North American. In the WWF, he was known as Mr. Perfect. Basically, he had this egotistical persona. It is a common gimmick, or character, in wrestling: you have a guy who says he's great and he proves it by winning matches and titles. Well, Hennig was perfect. He was great in the role. And, to get the character over, the WWF had these little video packages called vignettes that they aired on their shows. In these vignettes, Mr. Perfect would show off just how perfect he was. He would hit home runs all the time. He could throw perfect jump shots. He even threw a football once, ran down a football field, and caught the ball before it hit the ground. And, it was rumored that Hennig did all those himself without editing. Anyway, he came to the WWF in the late 1980s and was shown prominently on WWF TV in the early 1990s. He won the WWF Intercontinental Title (the WWF's second tier title to their World Heavyweight Title) twice, in 1990 and in 1991. He was very entertaining, and I always like. When Mr. Perfect first started wrestling in the WWF, he was a bad guy, or a heel as they're called in the wrestling business. In 1992, he took some time off from wrestling but remained on WWF television as a manager and commentator. Then, in November of 1992, Mr. Perfect went back to wrestling, this time as a good guy, or a face. Usually, these egotistical gimmicks only work as heels, but Hennig was so good in the role that he was able to get over with the crowd as a face. Hennig soon left the WWF and later showed up in other wrestling promotions. He kept on wrestling well into his 40s and was still very good at. While most wrestlers would go past their prime, Hennig never really did. Sadly, Hennig had personal demons. He had been taking steroids and painkillers for years. Then, on February 10, 2003, Hennig died of cocaine overdose at the age of 44. It was sad to hear him die. He was one of my favorite wrestlers. I had grown up watching him. Hell, he was a part of my childhood, and now he's dead. But, I don't really think about Curt Hennig's death when I hear the word "perfect;" I think about his life. I think about the great wrestling matches he put on and the vignettes and interviews he did. Curt Hennig was perfect.
