Ok, this is like the only thing in wrestling I still don't understand. Like, are the chairs standard chairs, or made out of a lighter aluminum? And I know the whole hand up trick, but what about chair shots that are directly to the head? I mean, wouldn't that crack your skull or come damn close? I think I'm missing something here.

Yeah, the chairs are just regular metal folding seats, like you'd find at any sporting event.
The whole thing is that you don't often see straight on head shots with chairs. Usually they're on the back, which hurts but isn't dangerous except for the usual wear and tear over time, or done so that the person can cover their face somewhat.
Direct shots to the head are just direct shots to the head. They'll leave a mark, and your neck and brain will get scrambled, but those are the shots that are always remembered. Mick Foley has said that the eight or ten direct blows he took during his infamous 'I Quit' match with The Rock were likely when he started to lose his memory.
So yeah, they're real, completely dependant on the strength and care of the person dealing them out. And they hurt no matter what.
That's just part of the whole thing.
The human skull is amazingly durable, too. You'd be surprised.

I'd take a back shot no question. Head shot? Both hands up John Cena style. lol.

As someone who has taken several chairshots to the head unprotected, i'd say that there is alot of difference in steel chairs. If you go to Wal-Mart or somewhere like that to buy your chairs, they bend easy and don't hurt as bad as some of the 'higher-cost' chairs. Not saying getting hit in the head doesn't hurt, but not likely to do much serious damage with the right chair and right swing.

that I quit match was just sick. Those chairshots...ugh It wasn't worth it. And most people don't even remember that match, and The Rock didn't even have a really good heel run because he was too busy playing to the crowd so it really wasn't worth it.

What's interesting is that despite his inclination to take very crazy bumps (not to mention a weedwacker to the chest), chairshots concerned Sick "Nick" Mondo more than anything else involved in his matches.

Well, while cuts and bruises will heal, your brain is important. Though you have to question the state of his brain in the first place for taking bumps off roofs through a bunch of light tubes and tables and things into concrete.

Nick Mondo... what a paradox. He seems like a sensible guy, though, based on what he posts regularly at his personal message board. I'm glad he got out of wrestling when he did, as his body left without incurring any lifelong damage of a substantial nature.

As punishment for beating up Meanie, JBL got an enormously stiff chairshot by Stevie Richards.
It opened up the back of his head and blood started coming out. Richards also said he hit him as hard as he could.
So it can damage the skull big time if you do it unprotected and real hard.

well wwe OBVIOUSLY use the lightest chairs possible, with the safe style thing and all. not sure about other promotions. i like the japanesse chairs where the seat part flys out when someone gets hit.
one thing i really hate, is wheer a wrestler will (blatantly) put his hand up to block a chair shot and will go down and be knocked out. i never knew u can get knocked out if u hit your hand??
