In the ring, perhaps he is the best worker there ever was. Out of the ring and everything else; he's not. The thing about Bret is that he never crossed over as a "major" draw to the "so-so" pro-wrestling fans the way Hogan, Rock or Stone Cold did. When you drop Hulk Hogan, The Rock or Stone Cold into a general conversation, people generally know who you're talking about. When you say "Hitman Bret Hart", they go "huh?".
I think Bret may have more 5-star matches than most superstars, but Rock, Stone Cold and Hogan have more memorable moments.
Also, Bret was just a solid guy on the mic, nothing horrible but nothing great either. He was a straight-shooter who just wanted to let his actions in the ring talk for him, and that works w/ only some of the pro-wrestling community. There are two parts to being a top-notch pro-wrestling entertainer; incredible action in the ring, and entertainment out of it - Hart may be the "best there ever was" only for the in-ring entertainment aspect.

Bret Hart was one of the best wrestlers ever but not one of the best sports entertainers ever.

I would totally disagree with that. I think almost EVERY minor fan of wrestling has heard of Bret Hart, from the old WWF days to the whole You Screwed Bret thing. In fact, I don't think I've ever met ANY person who's watched wrestling (or WWF/E at least) more than once who hasn't heard of Bret Hart.
