A while back I started a thread on wrestlers who didn't get a title run in the WWF and asked who should have gotten one. This thread, I want to know wrestlers who either got a title run but it just didn't work for them or didn't get a title run and it didn't hurt them one bit. The first on my list would be Andre. Just his sheer presence was all it took and he simply didn't need a belt to give him any legitimacy and when they had him beat Hogan the way they did for the title and the subsequent surrender didn't do Andre any justice.
On more recent times, Cena with the title doesn't seem to work for me and I'm not alone. When he didn't have the belt, he was a hell of alot more entertaining. Same with Austin. When he won the belt, I thought his title runs were "meh" at best and his non-title programs were far more entertaining. What do you all think?

Piper is the first name that comes to mind. Yes, he was IC champ once, but he would have still had a 4-5 star match against Bret at WM8 without the belt on the line.
Flair, Taker, and Rock also come to mind in terms of having enough of an aura and impact that no title is necessary.

Austin, Rock, Hogan, Flair, HHH and Undertaker
Have that aura because of their title reigns, without it they wouldn't have been seen as main event.
A guy like Piper the IC title was major in that it was like "Welcome Back" he's still got it kind of thing, but he never needed to win the WWE or hell even the WCW title.
Jake Roberts, I wish he could have been IC champ.
Nowadays if you don't get a main event push or one of the main titles "You're being wasteD", I never got that. Like I never saw Rick Martel, Roddy Piper, Mr. Perfect, British Bulldog, Goldust, Bam Bam Bigeloe, Razor RAmon, X-pac, or Tatanka as being wasted.
The only guy that they wasted that really should have won the title was Lex Luger, but that's in the past.
As long as a wrestler stays relevant he won't need the title or really any title.
Right now I'd say the only guys that need the titles are champions.
Though Chris Benoit and JEff Hardy, don't really need those titles they are keeping them relevant. Like I'd love to see somebody like Gregory Helms upset Chris Benoit for the US title.

Scott Hall never seemed to need any big world title run, he was just always over as hell.

Jake Roberts never needed any nationally recignized titles to make the impact he's made in this business. I absolutely love using Jake Roberts as an example because it prooves the point that you make yourself in this business. If you don't make yourself, then you either won't get made or creative will have to be the sole contributers to your presentation.
People look at the titles too much as wether or not someone got a chance, but I disagree with that assesment. I mean, people will say "Mr. Perfect never got a chance", or "Jake Roberts never got a chance", because they were never IC champion or World champion, or they weren't used as "main eventers". Think about this, It gives clear insight as to how much showmanship plays a role into wether or not you'll be a star:
-Jake Roberts very seldomly main evented a show, although he could have drawn alot of money, just not more than Hogan.
-Jake Roberts never won a title in most of his career, and defifitely not WW(F)E. -Jake Roberts was not a great athlete, or have an outstanding physique. I could have killed him in an arm wrestling match.
-Most of his matches, I can't remember by heart. He did about 4 actual moves in most matches he's had. But I've seen matches of his where he would put on great wrestling displays. Why is this? Because he chose showmanship over moves. He used those 4 moves in such a way that he would create a great story to the point that nobody would care that he only used 4 or 5 moves. -Dispite all this, Jake Roberts could have wrestled in the very first match on most shows (and sometimes would) and some of the people would begin to leave after his match. (mabe not go home, but for popcorn or something, but it still counts)
-Jake is reguarded as one of the greatest wrestlers ever. Especially heel. -He's definitely Hall of Fame bound. -Not many people have bad things to say about Jake as a wrestler, not even the IWC.
Jake was a great wrestler because he learned, and perfected, the craft of psychology in wrestling. Many try to learn, many do learn, some learn alot, but few actually perfect this craft, and Jake did just that. So much so that Jake could have been a jobber and never won a title anywhere in the world, and still be a member of the Hall of fame.

I'd day both of the Hardyz. After the reputation with the crowd they've picked up, they're pretty over.

The Million Dollar Man Ted Dibiase. Like Jake he didn't have the build to awe fans with, however his charisma and wrestling ability eclipsed this. He was the Heel that you respected, actually I can't recall Dibiase EVER being face. (the time he bought the title off Andre doesn't count )

I gotta disagree with Hogan. The championship is what actually made him. Austin didn't need one. Even without the belt they could have made the Austin vs. McMahon work because the title wasn't really the focal point of that feud. It was basically an afterthought because you can't tell me that the Austin vs. Dude Love made for great championship wrestling.
