The thread about the greatest spot in WWE history got me thinking about the greatest finish to a match in WWE history. It is one of the most important elements in making a truly classic match, given it is the last thing about the match you will see so therefore the thing that sticks in the mind the most.
Some overlap may exist with the spot thread, but I think it is different given that high spots are not necessarily the ending of a match - eg Foley being thrown off the HIAC, Hardy's Swanton off the ladder at WM16. Plus in many cases, finishes to matches are alot more complex than just a one spot.
As starters for ten I will go with:
Undertaker coming from underneath the ring and dragging Diesel underneath the ring allowing Bret Hart to climb out of the cage and win the WWE title match at the In Your House before WM12
Legion of Doom show up to pull Smash from under the ring and expose Demolition's unruly ways at Summerslam 1990 - in the meantime leaving Jim Neidhart to launch himself over the ropes and shoulder block Crush, who falls over the waiting Bret Hart into a school boy pin - winning the Hart Foundation their second tag team titles.
Backlash 2000 - Triple H, Pat Patterson, Gerald Briscoe and the McMahons are beating down the Rock, an obvious glass smash later and Austin demolishes everyone in site with a steel chair - except the Rock. As Austin leaves, the Rock hits the spine buster and people's elbow on Triple H for the duke, which is counted by Earl Hebner who had been brought to ring side by Linda McMahon. A very rounded and satisfying finish for me, if a little predictable - should have in my opinion been the WM16 main event.
Eddie Guerrero loosens his boot so when Kurt Angle attempts the ankle lock at WM20 all he gets in his hand is Eddie's boot, allowing Eddie to quickly grab a small package cover and hook the ropes with his feet for the pin
Roddy Piper is going to hit Bret Hart with the bell at WM8, but the crowd turn on him and convince him not to. Instead he grabs the sleeper, which Bret Hart counters by kicking off the turnbuckle into a unique pinning position. A similar finish was used in the Austin v Bret Hart match at Survivor Series 96 - but this was the original.
I will think of more later - but what are your thoughts?
