Is anyone else getting this kind of vibe from the way they've been pushing Orton in this feud with Cena. I can't help but get the impression that that's what they're aiming for with the direction of his character. He's also tall and lanky like Jake too. Now if only he could deliver promos like him...
Any thoughts on this?

He's not as good as Jake, but he's slowly, slowly approaching that.
Remember, Jake had 10 years experience already when he joined WWE, Orton's only been in WWE for 5 years. I guess being a third generation wrestler has really helped Orton perfect his craft.
Orton has FANTASTIC psychology. He knows how to teak the moment into something that works for his charactor, and that's something you just can't teach, you can only tell them how to learn it, but I guess him being a third generation wrestler is what's helping him with things like that.

Any thoughts on this? Hmm...not really. Jake came off as some kind of sinister genius. Randy comes off as an idiot who tries his best to remember the lines the writing staff wrote for him. Jake took a snake out of a bag. Randy takes a crap in a bag. Jake used a short-arm clothesline. Randy uses a chinlock. Jake used a gut-buster. Randy uses a chinlock. Jake used the DDT. Randy uses an RKO...right after using a chinlock.

I would have almost agreed with you there, but after I took a minute to think about it, I say that Orton is more than halfway there. If WWE really wanted to push Orton as a psycho, the way he's being prtryed right now, I say that other than promo ability, that he can strike fear into the young "marks" and children that we all had when we were watching Jake. I could tottally see Orton with the same charactor that WWE briefly gave Kurt Angle when he was stalking Sharmell.

and don't forget, jake was a pure performer, orton is an untalented sack of crap. if not for the lack of overall talent in the wrestling world, randy orton would be out of the business.
jake was among the best in wrestlings golden era.
randy orton is just a dullard

Honestly...yeah, I think I can see him getting to that level eventually. He's one of my favourites on the roster right now as it is...I see him being truly legendary in a few years.

I never realized having only one facial expression (apathetic) was considered the mark of a good psycho, nor having only one tone of voice.

Jake was one of the pioneers of mind game wrestlers. He could totally screw with you just by the look he gave when he talked. He had a sort of dark charisma that Randy just can't imitate. Jake will always be one of my favourite heels.

If you mean "In 10 years, will Orton be swinging a snake from his crotch as a surrogate penis while drunkenly slurring random shit?", then Yes.

Yes and no
He is getting there but his mic skills need some work. He's got some damn good psychology going though

Not trying to flame but I think both are overrated. So, yeah, you could say Orton is today's Jake Roberts.
Jake Roberts (as much as I like old school Jake) wasn't even Top-10 caliber during his own prime. Jake was a journeyman, who had maybe four decent years at a national level. That said, he was cool as f***, but I think he's tremendously overrated on most parts of the internet (and still better than Orton). Just my opinion.

No...
Jake LOOKED like a psycho. Orton looks like a random pretty boy pretending to be a badass.
Not a matter of in-ring skills/psychology, but a mere matter of looks.

Psychos don't look like the lead male role of a teen movie. Give Orton some facial hair (if he can grow it, can't recall ever seeing him with any, could just shave everyday, but that's beside the point lol) or some long scraggly hair. He needs a change in apperance before I buy him as some psychotic sociopath.

To OP:
I somewhat agree. He's not up to the snake's level yet, but the kind of psycho Orton is is kind of similar to Jake's psycho-ness. If that makes any sense.

Jake was one of the all time great promo guys and he smokes Randy in that regard, but I think Orton is better in the ring. I bought Jakes dvd set cause I found it cheap and I was surprised at the lack of decent matches.

randy orton and lanky don't really belong in the same sentence, let alone comparing randy orton to jake roberts in the same sentence
